Where's Hurricane Frances?

Thu Sep 02, 2004 1:38 pm

I'm using real live weather on FS2004 and I can't seem to find the hurricane. Any thoughts?

Try around MYMM. A bit north of there should put you pretty close. That will change with time, though. If you have FSNavigator, try finding an airport that is close to the center as shown on a satellite image. The images are readily available from http://www.noaa.gov.

Good luck with your hunting!!

Remember, try this only at home.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

It looks like there are others out there who are curious to see what it's like. Of course 140mph winds versus a Cessna at 90kts doesn't make much sense. I haven't tried it yet, but let me know how it goes.

Regards

I landed a 767 yesterday afternoon at PBI using real weather (55-60 knt winds). Very cool. I was crabbing all the way but still put that baby down. I can't imagine how scary that would be for real.

I ran into the same problem with Ivan at GCM. Went in while Ivan was over the island, downloaded weather, and nothing! Slight breeze, barometric pressure at 29.90. what gives?

A while ago I landed a MelJet 777 in HKG with 90 kts wind. I thought it was strange with a ground speed of 80 kts and having to crab down the centerline. It was only then that I looked up the weather in FS and realised. There must have been a typhoon there or something.

You can track the hurricane on here.

http://www.hurricaneadvisories.com/

Thing is, though, I don't think Jeppeson is bang up-to-date - I was in Trinidad on a round-world trip in my Mitchell, set up 'real weather' for September 10th., and flew to Jamaica. In theory I should have flown quite close to the eye, but all I got was thunderstorms.....

Eerie landing at Kingston, Jamaica, though. Lots of cloud and mist, but no wind at all.......

Remember, if the airports reporting equipment isn't able to be reached, or if its been sucked away, then real world weather can't load it. You'd have to find an airport that is still reporting weather even though the hurricane is near them.
