Herpa Or Gemini Jets

Mon Feb 07, 2005 6:27 am

Since I have run out of room for my 1:200 models, I have decided to start collection 1:400 scale. Only questions is, herpa or gemini jets, or are they reall pretty much the same? Eventually i'd like to do a model airport in 1:400 scale, but I haven't seen much in the way of maps for 1:400. Any info?

PiXelport makes a great selection of ground foils in 1:200, 1:400, and 1:500 scale. Not to mention the fact that the EzToyz and Herpa 1:500 scale foils also work quite well with 1:400 scale models, and the same is true with 1:400 scale and 1:500 scale G.S.E., terminals, etcetera.

As far as the original question is concerned, although Herpa has recently been coming out with some awesome models, not much can compare to the finest that GeminiJets has to offer (I once saw a model on eBay sell for $500.00), so I'd say that you'd be better off going with them, especially because they have a wider selection and some models can be purchased in either polished or chrome metal versions. Don't leave AeroClassics, BiGBiRD, Dragon Wings, or Phoenix Models out of your collection, though, unless you want to miss out on some of the best model aircraft out there!

dragon is actually more detailed than Gemini.Take as an example the winglets of a 747-400.In the GJ are twice as thick as in the real airplane.Go Dragon!!

Gemini and Dragon are much better then herpa 1/400, just look at a couple Herpa models and youll notice several things off about the plane. As for the 744 winglet, I dont know about that, both are good but I like the Gemini wings on it better, however, take an A320 or 737 with winglets, thats when Dragon is better, its a lot easier to get smaller plastic then metal.  Big grin

I prefer Gemini compared to herpa but the second has a wider selection on items that i am interested in (Olympic airways and other european & middle eastern airlines). The windshields on Herpa and the previous series of landing gears made her come last choice for many collectors.

Whatever, I am a total Herpa fan. They never disappoint me. I recommend Herpa.

SXFan,

You are so correct.

Jetjock, I would recommend anything other than Herpa. Dragon Wings, Geminijets, Aeroclassics, BigBird(as long as its 1:400), or Pheonix are all great, but if you like detail, stay away from Herpa. Herpa models are fine when it comes to like a 744 or MD-11, but on smaller planes like 737's, the landing gear is extremely fake looking. And it seems 1:400 are always the perfect size for me. My first choice is always Dragon or Gemini.

So what exactly is an airport foil? Is it like alumninum foil? I've never seen this before.

Nope, Pixelport is an over priced high detailed tarmac printed on heavy paper, thats why I make foils (tarmac) on my own computer, and that way they can be customized more so to my design.

No, I think it's just glossed paper with airport ground images on it. It's just called foil for some reason.

Do Dragon Wings and GeminiJets also make the 1:500 scale? I would like to compare the quality with Herpa then.

Gemini has a division of 1/500 called StarJets, they are still far better then Herpa's.

JetJock22-
I have 68 1:400 aircraft and they dont dissapoint me, both being from Dragon and Gemini, I was going to get the Herpa 1:400 NW A330, but then I took a close look at it and noticed about a million wrong things.

Stick with Gemini and Dragon.

That's the only Gemini Jets model that looks like a p.o.s. All the others look good Smile

StarJets is no longer producing any model aircraft.

I personally would recommend PiXelport. IMHO, Burnsie28 has something against them.

StarJets are re-branded Schuco models and since they ended their partnership with the German manufacturer they seized to exist.
Very good quality models though (I have the B722 & A340 of OA).
It's sad they are past

Nope, just why would I want to pay that much, when i can do it on my own and be able to fully customize my airport, with slots, logo's etc.

I'll toss my vote in the ring for both Gemini and Dragon. Marvelous detail on both brands. My extensive collection of Delta jets almost looks like Atlanta (and it will look even MORE like ATL once I get my Pixelport CD, which I bought for around $17 off of their website: Pixelport )

My $0.02.

First tip in 1/400, DON'T STICK TO ONE BRAND!  eyepopping

Gemini is better then Herpa in many cases, but there are many more brands in 1/400 scale; Aeroclassics, BigBird400, Dragon Wings, Jet-X etc.

My opinion, order your favorite subjects in 1/400 scale regardless of brand. Once you get them, compare them to see how you like each one and order more of the brand you like!  praise
I like British Airways! I'm not sure why, but I do! ;-)

Not the same at all in terms of accurate appearance where 1:400 scale is concerned. IMO Gemini Jets are "hands down" superior to Herpa in capturing the look of aircraft depicted. The more recent 1:400 releases (year 2002 and later) from Dragon Jets are "right up there" with Gemini Jets.

Having thankfully had the benefit of seeing 1:400 models from all three up close on display before I ever bought my first die cast model in this scale (I now have more than 100 in my collection) I have avoided Herpa altogether with one exception, their 747-400 which is the only type in their relatively limited 1:400 series (Herpa's main focus is 1:500) that I have found to have an accurate appearance.

Herpa's 1:200 models on the other hand are very good, generally comparable in quality to Starjets releases in the same scale.
