Well, what would you like to do the speech on? Think about a few key points when making your speech:

-Class (The history of Aviation in History class, etc.)
- who your presenting to (Don't go into a detailed description of how landing gear retracts into the aircraft, i speek from experience, it doesn't go over too well.)
-Time (if you only have 5 minuites, the history of Aviation might be a big subject, do the history of one airline or Boeing for example.)
- Interest (This kinda goes along with Number 2, pick a subject that people are interested in, for instance i did a report about how one of my friends pulls water skiers in his seaplane.)
Hope this helps!

Sorry everybody it was a bit vague. I was sitting in my english lesson on a laptop I had borrowed from the teacher. I was not meant to be on A.net, so I was rushing to type what I wanted to say.

First it is a speaking and listen test I have to do for my English GCSE's, and the teacher says I can do something I am interested in / hobby. So the first thing that came to my mind was "Aviation - Ask A.net users". The time is probably around 5 minutes. But the problem is, nobody in my class likes aviation and I am classed as a weirdo.

Firstly, you're not a weirdo, screw them... Their your grades. Let them get up and talk about cars and beer and whatever else 'supposedly'' makes a guy cool.

Why not talk on how planes land? IMO people are always interested in how some thing 71m long, 65m wide and 180,985kg's (B744) manages to touch down exactly in the centre of a piece of concrete 10000m long . Touch on ILS, Auto Pilot, Course Headings, COM/NAV settings and explain how they work together to get your classmates to Ibiza or wherever they think is cool. Make it idiot proof so they understand whether they want to or not.

Or you could talk on the prep work of Pilots, FO's and FA's prior to take off (completing flight plans, way points and emergency landing airports.

A good fact very few know (bar the FA's) is that cabin crew can, on trans-Atlantic/pacific flights, can walk up to 12 miles.

You can talk about CRM & how it can apply to the workplace.

Technology in the airline industry, recips, turboprops, turbo fans, turbo jets, & the future such as scramjet technology.

How simulator technology improved airlines safety...

Why not talk about your favourite airline, aircraft and include a few pictures, talk about thier history, what they operate and where they fly to
Ahh the joy of living under a flightpath

I have before done a project (150+ page folder) on Airbus, but that was two years ago and it was not very good as in a lot of info that would give me a good grade at GCSE

Sounds to me like it's an opportunity to shrug off the "weirdo" tag. In which case don't talk about the nerdy and techy side of aviation - talk about something unexpected.

The problem with asking on this forum is that you'll probably receive a lot of ideas which only interest other A.net members.

But your job is to engage your audience - so put yourself in their position. If they're not interested in aviation, then talking about technical stuff is going to bore them senseless unless you have extraordinary charisma as a public speaker.

Pick a subject they can relate to. Don't be an extract from an encyclopedia...tell a story, because people will stick with a story to the end. Throw in a sprinking of surprising and unusual facts. Add a bit of humour. And above all, believe in what you're saying.

Are you allowed to use like a projector? Maybe you could put together a nifty quick presentation (if you're computer smart) including photos and stuff like that.

AirbusA346 I have just done my GCSE English speech and guess what I did it on?  biggrin

I had the same problem too but once you start pumping their heads with facts like on average a new Jumbo Jet costs just under $200,000,000 they will really get in to it. My speech was only surposed to be 5 minutes long but it ended up going on for 45 minutes because of all the questions I was getting asked and me getting the highest mark in my class!  bigthumbsup

P.S Try to make it more interesting by bringing in something, e.g. a cockpit poster of a 747/777 or in your case an A340  yes

GOOD LUCK!!!

It's daft the only aircraft my class seem to know of is Concorde, and a boy in my class called David, still thinks Concorde is still flying. (what a dumb ass, doesn't he remember the 24th October 2003) and something else Dave said was name ten aircraft and I did, I said 747-400 as one and he goes what about the jumbo jet, and I goes a 747 is a jumbo jet. (he is such a dumb ass).

I thought of doing my speech on why they took Concorde out of service for ever. Any info would by helpful.
