Could The Next FS Have Graphics This Good?

Fri Jul 01, 2005 8:35 pm

OK, whilst not strictly flight sim related, EA Games have announced that there will be a new train sim call Rail Simulator. It's done through the same people as the original MS Train Simulator.

For those of you who have used the Microsoft Train Simlator, you will be able to appreciate how much better these graphics are:-

Can we expect something this good from the next version of MSFS.

P.S. How cool that "Rail Simulator" includes Virtual Airlines!!

Wouldn't that be sweet! And maybe a storyline with characters to boot!

Well, the problem is the huge amount of data I guess. A rail line is sort of a 2 dimensional thing, you only need the scenery that's right next to the tracks. A Flight simulator that has this incredible realism everywhere is not really going to happen anytime soon IMHO. But on the other hand you don't really need all that realism outside the airports. I mean what's the point in being able to read the nutrition information on the maccaroni & cheese box in the neighbor's garbage can. You don't see it from the cockpit, do you.

Birdwatching's got it right - the rail simulation only needs a band of detailed scenery running along either side of the track.

Good news about EA Games Rail Simulator, though. I'd heard MS weren't following Train Simulator up but it's good to know it isn't dead.

It seems to be good. But I think also the same, you do not need so much realism outside the airports, but I would suggest to detail the most important cities and also nearby the airports.

For example there's an add-on for Mexico City called Mexico VFR which adds tons of buildings etc.... which makes your landing or departure more realistic, since you (in real flights) see those buildings areas etc.

Anyway I couldn't imagine the sort of computer that would be needed for that lol
Best Regards!!! Eduardo Lepe.

I was really unimpressed by the first MS Train SIm, but if this one has good routes and graphics like that picture then I may well invest!

I know what you mean but the problem with a rail sim is that the routes are fixed so every route has to be provided in detail whereas in a flight sim the routes have no physical properties. Imagine programming all the rail routes that people are likely to want! As with FS, as long as the rail sim developers provide a decent engine (pardon the pun) other people will provide the extras, especially after it's been around for a while.

My main gripe is that I don't have the time for all these things but I just can't resist. What I really need are a shaving sim, a shopping sim and an eating sim to go with the rail and flight sims.
