Pmdg 744,How Do You Rate It?

Sat Aug 06, 2005 11:27 pm

Im a bit disapointed in the PMDG 744 i dont think it looks as good as their 737NG which looks amazing, their 744 has no real texture ,especially on the wings. It looks like its been cut out from a coca cola can.
Id rate it behind the Level D 767 and the PMDG 737.

Looks: 6/10
Price: 1/10

If I had to pick between the 747 and LDS 767, I would go for the 767. At least it's at a realistic price

Overall: 10/10
Graphics: 10/10 (try the 32bit textures!)
PMDG homepage and servers: 1/10 (servers are now back to normal, however)
Price: 8/10 (55 bucks for 18 months of development by mostly non-professionals resulting in such a realistic, extremely high detailed, bug-free add-on is not that much)

Yes i did use the 32bit. id give the PMDG 744 6/10 for graphics but id give the PMDG 737 10/10
and the Level D 767 8/10 for graphics.

I must say I'm not very happy, I used the DXT3 textures for a reason to see if I could get similar fps to a good solid 20-25 at LHR with all my AI and so on, in contrast the 744 I'm finding is poor with all these new techniques to assist the rates, perhaps I've got more tuning to do but the visual model hasn't really done it for me either.

In addition I find the sound jolts up (I have my sound settings as suggested in the manual) so on takeoff if you're applying the power from 0-100% by engaging the AT to take it up results in a sound replication along the lines of:

Why do I get the feeling that everybody is bashing a good product just for the sake of it?

You don´t like the visual model? Don´t buy it! They posted enough screenshots before the release.

You don´t like the sound? Download the MelJet 744 and stick with the default Microsoft 737-400 sounds!

Did you actually READ the manual? Did you read how they simulated the complex fuel system in every little detail? Can you imagine the complexity of this add-on?

If your answer is no, you should better stay with a free-ware product. If you just want a good-looking visual model and don´t care about accuracy or details, go for MelJet.

If you want a highly-detailed, extraordinary add-on, go for PMDG.

External textures not very good? I wouldn't know - I can't see them from the cockpit. As a simulation of flying a large airliner goes, I'd say it's every bit as good as the 737. My only gripe is that I don't seem to be able to use the mouse wheel for rotary switches but it's no big deal. The virtual cockpit in conjunction with Track-IR is superb.

Yeah, shame they don't give refunds... maybe they should think about giving a demo out with the costs as they are.

Just send me the money, dowload Project Opensky's 744, a sound package off of avsim.com, and you'll be just as happy.

Sorry, it'll take a lot more than a slightly enhanced default 744 to do that, as FrancoBlanco says. I only had the POSKY 744 briefly so I may have missed something but, from what I saw, the PMDG version has these extras:
  • fantastic virtual cockpit (does the POSKY version even have a virtual cockpit?)
  • 3 FMCs with auto-tuning nav frequencies
  • 3 autopilots
  • APU
  • systems such as fuel, bleed air, generators, fire-fighting
  • buttons, levers and switches for everything
  • locking/unlocking cockpit door (part of the checklists)
  • huge manual with all the information you need in one document

The POSKY may be great value for a freebie but it's not in the same league as the PMDG version. I have to confess, I haven't seen the Meljet version (yet). It's a bit like saying a BMW or a Jaguar is a waste of money, just give me the extra money and get yourself a {insert name of cheap car here} - mind you, a lot of people do  Smile.
