Replicate West Caribbean Crashed Flight

Sat Aug 27, 2005 9:58 am

Hey guys,

I just filed a flight plan from Panama City to Martinique replicating the crashed West Caribbean MD-83. In a way it was pretty cool cuz I used Google Earth to locate the precise point where the crash ocurred, but on the other hand it was kind of spooky to imagine those pilots didn´t have much chance to try and land the acft safely...

Anyone has done that with any other flight?

Is it too morbid? Jeeeeee...

You could say the same about the movie producers who have re-created the titanic disaster. Or the viewers for watching it.

Some how it doesnt feel right to recreate a flight that ended up killing human beings.

For pete's sake!! Stop over reacting!! It's only a flight sim flight! Do not ever use O'Hare anymore because that AA DC-10 crashed there? Bit sad really, grow up.

First of all, couldn´t agree more with both Gg190 and Ricci767. WHy do Hollywood make millions of dollars on movies about disasters (including airplanes crashes) ? . To me it´s because people like to see what happened and try and figure out the WHYS.

The reason I did it was because I wanted to try and see how such a thing could hve happened in first place. Additionally, who knows what happened in that cockpit and why the pilots did not take additional/ alternative actions (IF these were available) to try and avoid the crash.

I´m sure I´m not just any sicko, but am rather trying to understand the situation a bit more by looking at it from the crew/passengers perspective.

Don´t take it too hard, bro!

God damm people. I must not be the only one to have replicated accidents. AF Concorde, shutting engine down just after takeoff, fuel problems midflt in a 330. Flying just using engine power to turn on a dc-10, god, even crashing into buildings just to see how easy those people could train. I recall te nxt day they showed flt sim 2002 on the TV doing exactly that.

As weird as it sounds, u can attempt to try and see what situation the crew MAY of been in, and see what happens, and get A LITTLE bit more understanding of the accident
Where does the time go???

I did The Helios crash, but in ORD.Just measured how long would've taken me to bring down the plane from 34K ft. to 7K-10K., without causing structural damage.About 3 minutes. Is not morbid. Is human's nature.Every single time I do my pshycophisical exam for my PPL the Doc asks the same question:What would've you done if....
It is normal.

Mike

P.S:I tried the Tunisiair ATR too...  Smile

I don't see what the probelm is. I flew from DUS-MLA just a couple days after the Tuninter ATR-72 crash off the coast of Sicily. I started my descent just over the accident site. Big deal. With out trying to sound cold, but life does go on for the rest of us.

Are you a commercial pilot? I have always wondered what goes on in a pilot´s mind when he/she comes across the news of an accident. Serioulsy I have the utmost respect for them and I have met and become friends of quite a few of them ,but never had the guts to shoot that question.

Maybe you could tell me?!

Te mando un saludo!

No.I'm just a PPL,But I have a lot of sim hours.Enough for the cockpit familiarizatiom.Plus a current PPL, I think I would've done a pretty decent job.

The thing is the title of FS9 is "Miscrsoft Flight Simulator 2004. Now its not just any PC Game, it has the title of Simulator. A simulator is used to go over flights and to simulate situations. I also simulate crashes to flind out how they happened, because reading about it is not enough, People have to see it and a simulator is the safest and easiest way possible.

And it will never be a game unless MS start putting in machine guns and allowing you too suck the ground crew into the engines.

Hey we did replications of the Lion Solo crash (2004) using AS2 (provides a more accurate landing and abnormal ground roll situations, FS9 just ain't up to it) to come up with possible chain of events... guess what, our findings are more or less correct... We did it in a much shorter period than the NTSC here.

Call us Morbid?

How morbid it is depends on the intention why U're doing it... If U're doing it to scream "die people! Die!"... well, then you are!

Ever tried emergencies on FS? Come up with emergency scenarios? One thing that is fun is Loss of Situational Awareness ! How many times did U commit a "fast finger freddy" syndrome that led to the AA 757 in Cali ?

I wouldn't call it morbid at all, if used for scientific purposes.

JUST OUT OF CURIOSITY, I recreated 9/11 a few months after it happened. I wanted to know how fast the planes were going at the time of impact, because I've never seen an airliner going that fast that low until I saw the news that terrible day. I determined that it was in the neighborhood of 300-350kts. But I've never heard what was the actual speed.

But one spooky thing though, is that several of my (aviation-ignorant) friends would ask me to let them fly into buildings in FSIM, and this was several times and WAY BEFORE 9/11 ever happened. Over the years I've found that many aviation-stupid people think flightsim is very entertaining when crashing into stuff.

No wonder psychology is so confusing.  eyepopping

On another note, I think FS needs better crash effects... exploding fuselages, etc... seperating wings, the like.
