Miniature Airport Photos

Fri Sep 09, 2005 9:38 pm

Hello all!

Some of you might have seen my pictures of the new A380 in 1:500 scale at the civil aviation forum.

Hereby some other pics of my airport, I intend to make more photos shortly.

With regards, Martijn

This tower is equipped with a functioning red flashing light to warn low-flying planes. Also the windows of the tower are lit. When it is dark, I will try to make a photo of my airport with these lights (also terminal lights) on.

I am aware of the problem, I use imageshack but I cannot view them myself either.

I will try something different.

Varig

I see them now, they are great.

Thanks for sharing

Did you ever post the far out shot of the whole airport, if so I never saw it, would you be able to repost it...

Cheers

Yes I posted it earlier, but here it is again; no problem!

For those who possibly were concerned about the safety of my airport; see photo 2  Smile

Nice airport, Martijn  bigthumbsup
You can certainly be called an enthusiast.

I just imagine you standing at the AMS service desk, complaining about the infinite queues at the security screening and passport control that made you miss your connecting flight (like it happened to my colleague today), getting upset from their "that's-not-my-problem"-attitude and shouting:

"Fine, I'll go build my own airport! With blackjack and hookers..." Big grin

Hey Varig

Can you roughly tell me how much it cost you to build that miniature airport (excluding airplanes).

I am really curious, and also affraind I am gonna start spending a lot of money.

Well, I never dared to calculate it....

My airport buildings:

Hexagonal terminal: € 33 each x 2 = € 66
Connecting buildings € 30
Tower € 18
Cargo buildings € 27
Hangar € 27
Fire department € 8
Kerosine tanks € 9
Glideslope and localizer € 11
Floodlights € 8
Aviobridges, tugs, luggage
carriers, in other words
all things that make the airport
alive and busy... € 58
Human beings (60) € 20 (only € 0,33 per human being!)

€ 282

 eek  eek  eek

I will immediately cease this hobby Big grin

Hey Varig

Dang, that is roughly $355 US, I think I may have to put it on hold, dont think the wife would be too happy with spending that much.

It is a process; you start with a little terminal, then in a few months or so you get a bigger one; then eventually you "build" a tower... It is nice to see your own airport expanding. I started in March 2004 with only a little terminal.

Maybe a strange comparison, but when I go spotting at AMS, I use for € 16 fuel for my car. Skip spotting one time and buy a tower instead... know what I mean?

But in the end, the wives are right.... Hobbies costs $$$ and €€€

Hey, great airport! Have you ever thought of fiber optics? Their a cheap way of putting taxiway center lights and runway lights on if your interested... I've seen pics of them on, Magnificent! Just a suggestion! Great airport again!

I am working with leds already, though not for taxiway-lights. My buildings are lit by leds and the tower is also equipped with a red flashing light. I will try to make a photo of my airport at night.

Here is my airport at night photo. There are leds inside the terminal-buildings, as you can see the CO 777 is enormously lit by the led.

Very easy, it's just a light, could be from a special fiber optic box, or a LED if you really want. You put one end of the fiber optic by the light, then run it wherever you want, in this case to the taxiway center or so. When you hit the switch, the fiber optic tip lights up the color of the light powering it. Very easy, cheap and awesome!

I couldn't find any pics with model airports with them, sorry! Take care!

Varig your night photo is great. I only have one qualm. For an airport of such amazing detail, that helo in the foreground is profoundly cheesy. I know most people don't share my enthusiasm for choppers, but it is a Jar Jar binks in the world of Star Wars... it's blatantly not up to par with the rest of the set.

Love the airport though, so I'm not knocking it.

In fact, it looks like an R-44 or BO 105 but yet is not accurate to either.

it's an AWESOME hobby, just kinda expensive

Hmm.. What ground foil do you use for the airport diorama? 519861??
Looks brilliant. Do the fire trucks come separately?

One more idea.. If you have the space, make a mobile and attach planes to nylon so they continuously seem to take off and land.. Might make it more fun...

Those are great. You guys who make them must have lots of patience to be able to do those. I would love to have one of SYD. My sort-of uncle has a train track that I will inherit. It took him 20 years to make. Jetmatt777, those lights are awesome.

Do you guys find that 1:400 or 1:500 is more popular for models? I know the Herpa airports are 1:500 but see a lot more planes, at least at my local hobby shop, in 1:400 rather than 1:500.

I found the 1:400 scales to be more detailed for my liking than either the 1:200 or the 1:500.

I dont have an airport (nowhere to put one! But I do wish...) but I do have around 60 aircraft from Dragon Wings, Gemini etc.

Still looking for a good 1:400 supplier tho, all of my Ebay ones are going under or switching to other model types.

That's how they do it in the real world! You can even decide to have court battles with your simulated NIMBYs! Actually Herpa now makes houses to place on the outside of your airport and have figures picketing the departures hall !

Quoting RichardPrice (Reply 37):

The 1:500 is more popular IMHO since Herpa makes everything you need and now they even have lighting! I have the circular gates and some of the halls with the gate recesses and jet bridges as well as the control tower. I'm going to be moving in the next year and will make sure I have room. If your willing to shell out about $200.00 bucks herpa has a huge "starter set" that has just about all the pieces plus various bits exclusive to the set. I'm saving my pennies for it!

That was when I first thought you touchdown at the " ||| " mark...Not the "box". I don't appreciate you making fun of my airport. And btw my runway is very short and can't handle traffic touching down past the "||" marks.
