Your First Ever FS Addon?

Mon Oct 03, 2005 4:56 am

Does anyone here remember their first FS addon?

I remember coming across flightsim.com back in '97 at college, and suddenly realising there was a whole load of aircraft you could download completely free for Flightsim! My first download was a BA 737-200 in their 'Rendezvous' world tail, and I remember flying it from the default BHX (in FS95 just a runway in the middle of nowhere!  Smile) with the default 737 sound and panel (okay a tad unrealistic for the old "pocket rocket" but that was the moment that changed my FS life forever! The download was but 41K and after a few weeks I regularly had dozens of FS aircraft on a single floppy disk that I used to transport between home and college (no internet access at home back then!)...

I now have hundreds of aircraft as well as loads of scenery (and I've even started paying for addons now!!

What were yours?

And does this make me officially  old .....(in FS terms!)

Cheers,
Noel.

Some random DC-9 For Flightsim 5.1 It was the coolest thing that had happened to flight simming, as far as I knew. Heh, I never woulda thought I'd be making the screenshots that I have back then. Then again, I was only 10 years old at the time.

My own first add-on on my own PC was if I remember correctly a scenery of an airfield of Westwind Virtual airlines, must have been 1996.

GB Airports was mine. Thought it was brilliant at the time but how add-ons have improved over the years.

First payware was Dreamfleet's 737-400 (Greatest Airliners). I still use it albeit coupled with Ariane's 7374 and 7375. Still a great bit of kit.

I had a 747-400 add-on. Had the liveries of BA (Old and New), Virgin, JAL, Air France and so on. Was really good, even could activate seatbelts/smoking signs!

For me it was the Project Airbus A320 Air Europe, in FS2002 !

I was so impressed of the quality of the aircraft, comparing to the default 737 Big grin

Woow... even seatbelt signs!

Fun to share but a little bit of topic,
My first "official IFR flight" was if I believe in 1994 ( I was 13 years of age!) on FS5.0 in the learjet 35a from Chicago to New York!
I'll never forget the style I used to get there,
Take a map of the USA, take a radiant ruler, put the ruler with the correct radiant to NY, it showed 110°, take of at KCGX, turn right to course 110°, tune in to JFK VORTAC (117.50?? if I remember correctly!) and wait till you get the VOR and cheer;
LAND IN SIGHT or better NY!
FSIM colombus style!
(Because between Chicago and NY there was nothing rendered of VOR's let alone airfields!)

and today I fly the PSS A340 merged with POSKY's A340 from Zürich to Bangkok and singapore, as real as the real bird just as routinely as going to the grocery store!
FSIM has come a loooooong way!

It may sound daft but my first add-on was Flight Sim 2000

I had FS98 and decided to order the inside guide from Amazon. They sent me the guide to FS2000 by mistake.

Reading through the book I realised that FS2000 was a lot better than FS98 (GPS) etc so I had to go out and buy it.

Mine was British Airports VFR for FSFW95. Added 300 airports from the British Isles to FS. That was nearly doubling the number of airports on the sim!

I was dead impressed with the addon, especially since it only cost me a fiver! and because it was the first time I had ever seen the Isle of Man airport in FS, i could now fly out of my home airport!

Mine was an Aero Commander 520 (or some 5xx model, I don't remember) for FS2002 from flightsim, and it took me forever to get it up and running because I didn't know squat about how to install it, but once it was there, I flew it and thought how cool it was and how realistic it looked compared to the default planes. Now I have around 100 planes (all AI, since I use AI planes for flying as well) each with an average of 5 repaints, and have written roughly 3,650 flightplans for them all. The only thing I haven't changed is the scenery (non-airport).

First add-on was probably Fireball XL5 (!) from Flightsim.com for FSS98 or FS2000. I don't bother with freeware aircraft anymore, having got a few excellent payware examples; PMDG 737 & 747, PSS A330/340, Abacus VC-10. I still take a few scenery updates, though.

The first payware was some potentially good but dreadfully executed BA stuff from a company whose name I can't remember. One of the flight magazines got so many letters of complaint about them that they asked for a comment. The company told them to get stuffed and threatened to sue if anything was published about them. I think they lasted a couple of months after that.

The first legit payware would have been World Airports, I think.

I feel so fresh here. Back in the FS5 days I was still... let's see... under the impression that girls indeed had cooties. I do, however, recall playing FS5 once. Couldn't even get the Cessna up. I must have been 7 or 8.

I learned on FS2000. First download was through my brother-- Meridian VA 737-300. Wonderful memories on all those flights around Memphis. A lot of the time I was using field-centered VORS as Localizers until I was visual w/ the field. I tried that in Pittsburgh. Clueless boy of twelve.

FS2002 was MY first sim... most memorable download has to be Mexicana 727. I find Mexico very attractive for its high field altitude/ocean environment.

FS2004... I've donwloaded so many hundreds of files by now I couldn't tell you what the first was, but my favorite thus far is the POSKY CRJ-200.

Sorry can't remember my first addon but am pretty sure it was downloaded from www.flightsim.com.

I got my first pc in 1990 which came with FS3 on a 360k floppy. Yes those were the days. Played default for many versions. Not until FS98 (I thinK) did I start downloading addons. My first payware addon wasn't until recently. Probably ActiveSky 2004.

Boeing 747-200 for Flight Simulator 2004.
First Class passengers are my favourites. They can't get any further forward without an ATPL.

LOL. I remember one day, back when I had FS2000 (which had a glitch, cuz it would never run) I bought a (I think ) Perfect Flight Addon American Airlines. I was very excited, because I had always wanted to see real airlines. ( I was just an unducated young lad back then  Wink ) So when I got FS2002, I stumbled across the CD again, after having been buried, cuz FS2000 didn't work. It wasn't compatible with FS2002, so I called Microsoft, asking them why it didn't work (knowing perfectly well they wouldn't be able to help me) . The guy at Microsoft informed me, a very happy me I might add, that there were websites that had free addons. So if I remember correctly, I searched google for FS addons, and of course the first couple were AVSIM and Flightsim.com. I really wanted those, but they had to have an account (free, I know, I know, but I was too lazy to get one) so I found Surclaro.com. I was so excited when I found the AA MD-82. It suddenly changed the way I looked at Flight Sim, far cries from doing the same flight in FS98 from ORD to Palwaukee Airport in a Lear 45, I was very disappointed because AUS (my home airport) still had a dirt runway on 17L, which had been opened for a couple of years at that point. And then I finally found the addon in FS2002 for AUS, and after several e-mails between the designer and myself, got it to work. (To my own credit  Smile it was harder than most, because it needed to add exclude and flatten lines in the scenery.cfg file. But thats my story, and I've gone from there, and don't ask me how to get the 2 minutes you just wasted reading this back.  Smile

I just got it on Fri. It was a DL Dc-8-73. But I deleted it just as fast. For some reason I just didn't like it. Now the 1st download that I kept was Mike Stone's Lear 35. Let me tell you I flow the crap out of that thing.

Having just upgraded to FS2002 was searching the web and came across a UA A320 for download and thought this looks too good to be true, real world airlines for free, can't remember what the website was but it all took off just after that. Couldn't live without AVSIM and flightsim.com now.

First one for me was on FS2002. I found out you could download free stuff for FS and once I started I coudn't stop. The absolute first download was POSKY's Atlas Air 747-400F package containing three liveries. I was so happy to be flying an accurate model instead of the MS default, which I thought to be an insult to my favorite airplane. Fortunately most of the planes I had on FS2002 were compatible with FS9 when I upgraded. That was a blessing and a half. Now I check AVSIM daily for new stuff. Lately it seems like I get one new plane everyday. I have at least one of every well known jetliner except Concorde. Can't seem to find a decent one of those for FS9. As for the 747, it's my favorite plane so I have around 30-40 of those.  bigthumbsup  All of them are POSKY.

Anyone remember the Flight Sim 'Flight Bag'? for the longest time it came on a single 3.5" floppy disc. I forgot what magazine you could order it out of, but I have a stack of those discs lying around. They came with stuff for FS5.0/5.1 I also have a stack of cd's that had the 'flight bag' stuff on it for FS98. I'm fairly certain that the floppy disc flight bag stuff was my first addon since I didn't find the AOL 'Flight Simulator downloads' section until I was like 10.

First addon? "FlightSim FlightShop" for FS5.0

I remember my trusty P1, 66mHz booting up Windows95, dropping into a DOS prompt and starting FS to see....wow, a NW 747-400! Awesome!

Zeos 33mHz Intel DX2 with 8mb of ram and 512kb of video ram. Booted straight into DOS. My craptastic monitor capable of 640x480 max. Load up FS5.0 (on 2 floppy discs), Hop in at Meigs, turn on 'mouse as yoke' (took long enough to get the mouse drivers to work), and go!
