I'm west of the centre - Slateford, if you know it, near Tynecastle. Moved here about 11 years ago from Glasgow - a Weegie in Embra! It's stupid but I've only been out to the airport a couple of times to collect someone and I've got plenty of time on my hands at the moment. With a pair of binoculars I get a fairly good view of aircraft departing 24 and arriving 06 from my sitting-room.

Ahh, 06 arrivals are morning and evening usually and 24 are departures in the afternoon normally.

As i said, i saw the CO B767 arriving today. It was 06 approach as most mornings, and it is a lovely view.

Thanks

Well... there's only one runway so doesn't the wind have more of a say than scheduling? If 06 is in use I see arrivals, if 24 is in use I see departures.  Smile

I amn't stupid, i do know how RWY direction works!!!

I was trying to say what the usual directions are. And i know how correct i am with the directions i mentioned. After all, i do see aircraft landing and departing in EDI every day.  Smile

Thanks

It will never operate like that on a regualr basis. Yes there will be a predominant wind direction most of the time, but it won't change as you say 3 times a day like clockwork.

If you had just said the runway that is mostly in use is runway 06 then it would have been a lot simpler than stating that the weather follows that strange pattern on a regular basis.

Well, i usually see RWY 06 in use in the morning and evening. When i leave in the morning and when i get back home in the evening.

Whenever my family go on holiday, i look at the arrival and departure time. If it is in the morning, i look out and i see them leave 99% of the time. I see them arrive if they land late evening and i am 99% correct.

I do sit and watch the activity sometimes, and i very rarely see departures at 06:00 on RWY 24. Although i did depart at 0700 when i flew to BFS, but we landed back on RWY 24 and that was in the afternoon.

Thanks

It may be that when the wind is insignificant they'll vary the runway in use for noise abatement.

During the day 24 departures are more obvious to me because of the angle I see them at as they're climbing - arrivals are more head-on so they have a smaller cross-section. At night 06 arrivals are more obvious because I can see the landing lights.

I'm going to study this.  Smile

About what?

It is pretty simple what i was trying to say. In the first place, i said that USUALLY RWY 06 was used in the Morning and Evening, and 24 in teh afternoon. I have seen this process for years.

The reason this started, is because you said:

Picking it up wrong. I was only trying to state an observation.

Thanks

By saying that you are implying that it goes by time of day, if the wind direction is such that 24 needs to be in use in the morning and evening then so be it.
Having worked in the airport all summer at all sorts of times, the time of day has nothing to do with it, 24 is used more often than 06 generally I'd say. But that's obviously down to wind direction, and they aren't going to change the runway direction in the afternoon if the wind direction hasn't changed,

Again, i say USUALLY

I watch the aircraft arrive and depart everyday. I USUALLY see arrivals on RWY 06 in the morning and evening, and RWY 24 i USUALLY see in use in the afternoon.

I AM NOT IMPLYING THAT IT GOES BY TIME OF DAY!!!

I AM IMPLYING THAT USUALLY THE TIMES ARE SIMILAR EVERYDAY.

Thanks

But that doesn't usually happen. It's usually 24 ops full stop. 06 obviously isn't used as often due to the direction of the wind which leads to 24 ops more often.

That's funny how nearly every mornings and evenings i see arrivals on 06 and nearly every afternoon i see departures from 24.

I do live directly under the flight path, i do know which way the airport is and i do know what i am saying is correct. It is probably you not understanding it properley.

Thanks

So in other words you are saying that nearly everyday the wind changes direction in the afternoon, which it doesn't. When I start shifts at 5/6am 24 is in use more often that 06 is, but as I've already said that is simply down to the fact that the prevailing winds dicate that 24 is used more often.
