Lap Tops That Support Fs2k4

Mon Dec 12, 2005 7:12 am

I know this topic has been discussed before. I however can not find the tread.
I am looking for a lap top that can support fs2k4? Anyone know of any?

Best bet is to get one geared towards maximum performance.. Dell has a few that would probably work well, if you don't mind spending a crapload of money..

Make sure the video RAM is dedicated, the HDD is 7200 RPM, and you have a nice gig of RAM or more..

Additionally, it would be good to have (of course) a higher end CPU..

Sorry, should add this

You'll want to do what you can to make sure you can get good airflow around the unit. Heat is a major problem with laptops and a very large cause of their failure.

Steer away from these processors:
Duron
Centrino
Celeron

Best bet is the P4 with HT. Be prepared to spend some $$$.

Anything with a P4HT with +3ghz, at least 784 in ram and 128mb dedicated video card (not on board) should be enough.

i can understand keeping clear of the Duron and Celeron, but I would opt for the Centrino over the P4.

Also the HDD speed wont make much difference to your flying, just the speed it takes to load FS. If you have enough RAM it will just dump all the files needed there so will avoid disk swapping.

I'm just about to change my laptop and I'm looking at a Centrino 740/750, 128mb+ dedicated graphics (geforce radion etc), 1GB RAM.

The Centrino performs as well as a P4 chip, only it is optomized for laptops and runs a lot cooler (not to mention better battery life). I have the 1.6GHz Centrino processor on my Dell Inspiron 6000, which performs like a 2.4GHz P4. FS2K4 runs great with 512MB RAM and 128MB dedicated ATI graphics card. You are going to need a lot of memory. Most of all, you don't need to spend a fortune as you can probably find an Inspiron 6000 for around $1500 with 1GB of RAM memory. Just be sure to get one with the dedicated card as they are a bit rare on that product line.

Agreed, I have similiar but with 1GB RAM and it runs pretty smooth except in really built up airports (LHR, CDG etc.) even with ultimate traffic, fspassengers and other addons included.

I would recommend either a PentiumM based system (the CPU in the Centrino laptops - Centrino is a marketing name for a bunch of stuff, its not a CPU) or an AMD Turion processor which is the mobile version of the Athlon64, which is a very capable chip.

Lots of ram, 1GB minimum.

A fast harddisk - people forget this, but Windows *will* be swapping to disk and loading textures.

I use a nearly 3 year old Dell 8500!

Spec:
-P4M 2.4 Ghz
-512 Ram
-64 Dedicated graphics cards
-60 gig 4200 Rpm hard drive

Result:

It works perfectly well under most circumstances. But when U use either add-on detailed sceneries, AI traffic or Payware plane, it struggles a lot, heats up very quickly, and frame rate goes down! So be warned!

Anyway it's now time to replace mine! Looking for a top-notch Dell 9300 laptop for about 2500 Euros! Should do the trick I think!  Smile

I use an ACER Ferrari 3400 with the Athlon 64 chip, 512Mb and 128Mb Video dedicated. Runs fs9 with PMDG 737NG and Level D 767 like a deam but does get very hot running Flightsim over extended periods of time.
