What Plane Made You A Plane Geek?

Thu Jan 05, 2006 1:14 am

If you first got interested in aviation upon sighting a certain aircraft that took your breath away. If so, what plane did you first "fall in love" with? For me, it was the MD-11. I remember seeing it for the first time around 93-94 and thinking how cool it was to have those thingies at the wing tips (winglets). Not a very orthodox method to deem coolness, but you can't expect much from a then 12/13 year old.
Oh no, she's getting impatient! Take a stab at it!

Actually it started off with Airlines. At first I collected all kinds of airline logos (used to draw them myself), but then I started having my favourite airliners. I think the one that favoured me most in the beginning was the MD-11, also because the Swissair-Asia logo was an eyecatcher for me.

DC-9s and 727s seen from the old terminal at Milan Linate.

In the 70s/first half of the 80s, the old terminal had an open elevated space from which passengers and curious people could watch the apron and the rwys/taxiways. Those aircraft were almost all from AZ and merger companies ATI and Aermediterranea.

The most exciting moments were the takeoffs as seen from that platform, to me it seemed that the plane flew just some inches above our heads Big grin

Well it isn't my favourite aeroplane now, but it was the first time I flew, and ever since then I was in love--the Boeing 727-200. I just loved going down full throttle down the runway and the feeling of the take off was incredible. And seeing the clouds from above was just breathtaking. I just knew I had to do something with aviation (10 years later, I am just starting to take lessons).

Nice thread , but isn't this for the polls ?

For me it would be the LH A343 ! "The most economical Airplane at its time , the new Biz class with 50% extra place and PTV compared to the old , the new ECO class with those very nice headrest" which were to high for my head then.
Doesn't need any thinking

For me it was the MD-11, my dad was a ramp agent for FedEx and brought me to work one day and I got a first hand tour from the First Officer. It was awesome! As a kid it amazed me how they unloaded and loaded so fast!

That sealed the deal for me!

For me it was my first flight on a Pan Am 707 circa 1979. I was three years old at the time and actually remember the flight. Later the route my family always flew on (IAH-JFK) was upgraded to a 747 and I got a seat with an awesome wing view on one flight. That awesome flight pretty much sealed it for me.

The Boeing 727 did it for me

My aunt was a f/a with UA for 35 years ... we'd go to the (old) ATL airport and visit with her between turns

the 727 just looked like a real jet ... that long, sleek design, sharp nose, pulled back wings ... and in the old UA colors, it was one sharp bird

...

when the L1011 came along, i fell in love with it too

...

i have to say now i really like the B717

Growing up in the early 90s, all the TriJets and the 747s helped me become the "plane geek" that I am today. Now, it's the 762ER and the A345.

The first planes I went on (7 and younger) first inspired me... 747-200, 737-200 and the BAe 146. Everyone around me encouraged me as well. I'll always be regarded as a "plane geek" by my friends.. Now I continue to be awed by the 747-400, 777-300ER and the 777-200LR - the speed, range and capacity does it for me.
It's all about the destination AND the journey.

I was waaay too young to remember.

The aircraft varies between B737-200's to BAC-111's.

Here is an example of what i may have seen:

My grandfather's Beech Bonanza. I'll never forget my first time that I got to sit in the right seat and watch the gound vanish from beneath us. Ever since then, I've been a self-proclaimed plane geek.

My first trip to New York, with my parents when I was a little boy. We took SR110 GVA-JFK with a B742 HB-IGA and back with SR111 with the same a/c. I remember all the buzz before/during/after the flight.

Then the same year I travelled with my little brother with SR146 GVA-DKR-GIG-EZE-SCL with a DC10. An then falled in love with HB-IHL.

When I was a kid, I felt that this was a much more "realistic" flying experience, as you could actually see the pilot handling the aircraft for the entire flight... and often I was lucky enough to ride in the right seat.

It was a BA 747 flying from LHR-SFO in 2001. Having only previously taken domestic flights from GLA and EDI to BRS on tiny Dash 8s I was hooked by the sheer size of the jumbo jet. I was also astounded by the fact that the plane had an "upstairs" and the fact that it could fly for so long (10 and a half hours).

Not a particular aircraft but... Kai Tak! We lived over the hills from the airport but whenever we ventured into town the first thing we'd see as we crested the hill was a stream of 707s, DC-8s, Convair 880s and assorted props, weaving between the buildings and rolling out on to that famous runway. Then the 747s started arriving!

I was driving and got bored so stopped at the viewing area at TOL. In the distance I saw a NW 747 approaching in the clouds but thought it was too good to be true. Soon enough the 747 landed right in front of my eyes at TOL, followed by a DC-10 then an A320 due to bad weather in DTW. It was sweet!

Let me add something more: late 70s DC9s and 727s at Milan Linate played an important role in my aviation geekiness, but recent (in the last three years or so) flights with Ryanair from BGY revamped my interest in aviation.

I'm really in love with the 737.

I don't remember. My Dad flow a lot when I was a kid, so I guess it was more the airport rather then the plane. The airport was LAS so I guess the 757 had a lot to do with my loving everything about air travel. But now that my older and know what the web is it would have to be the 737-200 and the 727-200 the good old days. I have a friend that worked at RDU when it was a hub for AA and he said that they got a lot a 727 in and I could sit a lesion for hours.

Thanks,
Nick

No specific plane did. Living 8 miles out from Heathrow airport on its flightpath probably made me fascinated by airliners but I don't like other planes much. I hate GA planes with a passion but know you have to start somewhere to end up as a commercial pilot (doh).

It's definitely the DC-8 - not only because it was the first aircraft I flew on but also b/c my home airport saw many of these Diesel-8's buggering around back in the 70's and 80's. One of my relatives used to be a flight attendant flying for Air Bahamas.

The first one I can recall being intrigued by was the McDonnell F-4 Phantom II.
