Looks amazing, but this is what I don't like to see:

For the more gameplay minded, we are adding a new mission-based element to give fans a more objective driven experience with a sense of progression and skill development.

I hope they don't cave to "gamers" out there and only improve graphics and these "missions," but also improve features such as ATC. That 747 Dreamliner shot showed a bit of the terminal, and it didn't seem as though it was anything special.

My first impressions:

Graphics:
- Looks like the same rendering engine (dx9/10, microsoft, duh)
- Clouds are the same
- More detailed ground textures
- More tree variety (can be added on to fs9)
- Finer resolution terrain (can be added on to fs9)
- Better lightning effects
- More polygons in the built in planes

It looks identical to FS9, with the exception of lightning effects (on the aircraft and tarmac).

From what we know now, it looks like FSX won't be much of an upgrade from FS9. That might change once we get more info on the ATC system.

What I don't like so far, is no screen shots of the flight deck. We are supposed to be flying these things, not watching it from 3rd person. Other than that, the spiffier graphics looks like it can still run on my XP box.

I would love to know if they will support Intel Mac, assuming DirectX 10 is available for it. That can be quite interesting if it does. I rather not upgrade my clunker PC just to play this.

I am not new to Flight Sims, just an ignorant one, thinking MS is the only one in town. After discovering X Plane, I quickly uninstalled FS9 and got instantly hooked to XP8.

Sigh, there we go again.
Aaron falls into the exact same trap that a lot of people did when FS2004 was announced and assumes FS10 is "the same as FS2004 with some small graphics improvements".

Kid, you can't draw any such conclusions from a few smallish screenshots.

And of course you draw the wrong conclusions even if you could draw any except that it looks great.

Noticed the flying birds? Moving traffic on multilane roads? Aircraft with skis? glass reflections? Greatly improved landclass and ground textures? specular reflections on aircraft? Vastly improved autogen?

And that's just things you can see in a few smallish screenshots.
Improvements to performance, ATC, AI, FDE, weather engine, etc. etc. don't show there, yet you conclude they're nonexistent because you don't see them.

While those screenshots are not making me grasp for air i do like what MS says here: "We also focused a select number of high-detail airports and added a new level of “interactivity” that the add-on community will certainly expand upon."

I can't imagine what that could be but i like it! There has always been something life-less and dull about the airports in MSFS, it's time to liven them up a little.

Not to be an asshat, but don't talk to me like I'm a child.

If you had actually read my post, you would see that I said it "looks" identical.

Again, if you had read my post, you'd see that I only commented on the graphics, not the gameplay. I'm not stupid, so don't talk to me like I am. I would be ignorant to think that it's the same game because of the way it looks, I just said that they 'look' similar. Just because I didn't lay the 'the other crap will be different' statement out there for you, doesn't mean that I think the actual gameplay will be the same.

This game has ~10-12 months before it's released, I'm sure there's MANY things that the new game does, that we aren't and won't be aware of for quite some time.

Personally I hope they improve the ATC - while improved graphics are always good I think that the ATC/AI Aircraft inteligence is one of the major let downs to FS9.

A: We are working hard to deliver “Flight Simulator X” in the holiday 2006 timeframe.

My main question is which holidays?? I presume (hope) they mean the Christmas holidays as I plan on purchasing a new PC around then as my current one will be 2 years old.

Yeah, actually that's a neat idea. It has happened that i have slewed into the terminal of for example STN (some freeware addon for it) and watched approaches and take offs through the green tinted windows.

Other than that you could hear/see actual passengers board the plane, make the loading/startup procedure a whole lot more realistic by having to handle with the catering, clean-up, de-icing etc. Not that you'd nessecarilly do all these things yourself but that you could feel their precense and to some extent interact with them. That'd be pretty neat.

If you don't want to wait for that function to be released within the Flight Simulator platform, you may want to check out this website:

www.fspassengers.com

Download the DEMO. It allows you to load passengers, feed them, entertain them and make money for your own airline.

Its relatively fun!

It was mentioned somewhere that airports will feature moving ground vehicles, fuel trucks, baggage carts etc.

By the looks of the screenshots its gonna take a pretty decent machine to run that with full graphics, I might wait until it comes out then buy a new machine. Doubt my 3200+ with X800 will be much use for FSX!

Probably something to do with service trucks on call, etc.

Whenever someone says "Holiday 2006" in the US, they mean the period starting immediately after Thanksgiving and running through about New Years. So I'd look for this one sometime around early to mid-December.

Apart from the lack of nosegear on the 747 (which is obviously going to be fixed), I can't make out what's in the center of that screenshot. Is it a puddle? Landing/taxi light?

GENERAL THOUGHTS: I don't see anything really revolutionary - only natural progression. But I don't think that that's such a bad thing - FS2004 is very good as is, and apart from fixing a few glitches, I don't see any reason to considerably mess with what has worked. I will admit that the ATC part needs serious work, but we don't know anything about that yet, so I'll hold off on further comment.

I like:

  • Default scenery much improved - this is very important for me, since I do lots of longer flights in real time, and the current default scenery gets very repetetive very quickly
  • The more detailed ships, and cars on the roads (provided they don't eat up too many frames)
  • Terrain mesh looks much improved

I don't like:

  • The birds - yeah, they look nice, but how much processor power is it going to have to eat up to make them act in a realistic fashion? I'd rather see that be diverted elsewhere.
  • Airports don't look improved - I'm only judging from one screenshot, but with the progression of the other default scenery, it seems a shame to have left the default airport buildings behind.
  • Weather doesn't look improved - the changes could all be behind the scenes, in which case I'd gladly retract that statement, but it looks like the same cloud textures from FS2004.

On your first point, I agree, but I think your wrong on the second point. Either the original article or the article on flightsim.com which I also read mentions that the weather engine has been given an overhaul, granted it looks the same in the photos, but it apparently has recieved an overhaul.

Also the article mentions airports are now more dynamic, with some unofficial sources suggesting moving gates, baggage trucks which greet the planes etc.

The screenshots do not reveal these features, im sure they will be announced in due course.

I hope its going to be easy to turn off the cars on the roads and the birds, as i think they will be resource intensive, and little to the sim.

a significant improvement,a better world for my virtual passengers to live in if i dont kill them first.(last week i flew into a mountain, directed by atc).
When fscof came out people's initial reaction was poor but it didn't take long to change.
Ill buy a new pc when it comes out although pc's aren't improving like they used to.Ive had my 3.2mhz for 2.5 years and there are still 3.2 mhz pc's being sold.
your pilots today on this 747 flight are captain oliver hardy and assisting will be FO stan laurel.Have a safe flight

I dunno what to say. Yes, it looks like a decent improvement graphics-wise, but I wonder if the engine has changed at all, because a new, more efficient and realistic engine is what FS has been needing for soooo long.

To me the ultimate FSim would be one with MSFS graphics, and driven by the X-plane engine.

Still looking forward to getting my hands on it though Big grin

I would really like to see FS focus first on FPS, and then play with realism. There's enough addons available aftermarket to make FS realistic.. it's the FPS that kills! There's so many other grahpics engines that handle intensity like FS, while retaining the clarity and FPS.
It only takes five years to go from rumor to standard operating procedure.

very cool!
Already one item snapped of my wishlist!

Only one (or maybe two) on my wish list;

-ATC SID-STAR recognition and seperation.
-sloping runways and taxiways.

If those two are implemented I' am a very happy man next Christmas!

I'd expect Microsoft to make some improvements to their "detailed" airports/cities, possibly adding some new ones to those included with FS9. I'm pretty sure they'll leave most of the scenery improvements to add-on developers, who will now be able to work with reflective pavement textures to simulate wet runways and taxiways along with other improvements to the graphics engine we've yet to see. All I'm really hoping for as far as the baseline package goes is some improvements to the ATC modeling and maybe a couple default aircraft that are on par with the better payware models available (PMDG, Level D, etc.)

I love how they specifically included a picture of Ayers Rock (In FS9, a lot of people complained because it wasn't in it.)

I hope the MSFS dev team comments soon about the loss of Gmax being distributed and supported and how it will affect third party developers (payware and freeware) in the future. Hopefully they still have some type of license/SDK and work something out with Autodesk as it's the primary tool for doing aircraft modeling and scenery.

And... Hopefully the rendering engine is upgraded to support many more lighting effects since the good payware developers are using up all of the available lights. The VC lighting system needs a rework too. Personally, if they left everything else unchanged given the third party support available it would be the most welcome update ever.

yes, there were a lot of people saying when the first preview shots of FS2004 were released that it was "just FS2002 with some more eyecandy" and that they would never buy it.
Most of them were among the first to announce that they'd preordered it a few months later.

Jwenting, I never was saying it's not worth buying. I'll tell ya straight up! I'm going to ditch around 1000 dollars into new computer parts just to run games. This one is no different from other games I'd like to have.

My post was simply a critique of the lack of change seen in the graphics from FS9 to FSX.

The only significant improvement I see is in the ground textures, and I'm not sure if I want to lay $3000 for a supercharged computer just for that... Like one guy said on the APG forum, its almost cheaper now just to become a real pilot... 100% accurate terrain modeling, 100% accurate aircraft/airlines, and (cynically) he said if you crash, 100% accurate crash dynamics...

Wow they've really been working on the ground textures which i think is the biggest dissapointment in FS9. Those shots look fantastic, I just hope the finished product looks as good.

Edit: reckon they'll finally include sloping runways? That would be awesome.
