Who Will Buy A New System For Wvista And FSX?

Fri Jan 06, 2006 11:00 am

I' am considering to buy a completely new high end system when Wvista and FSX come out to get the best out of it.

Are there more planning to do it?

I currently run a PIV 2.4 1GB RAM dating from december 2002(!) and I had a remarkably good experience with it altough in PC lifetime this system is 150 years old!

Me! Vista will (more than likely) take advantage of 64 bit and dual core processors. I'd imagine FSX will follow suit with support for those features as well. I wanna be able to run it at full graphics settings AND get acceptable framerates. I think that'll be possible if it does indeed support 64bit and dual core processors. I only pray that Microsoft will have the foresight to write in support for SLI.

Anyway, here's a quick run-down of my 'future' system specs.

AMD 64bit Opteron Dual Core 1.8gHz
DFI Lanparty SLI-DR Expert
2gig Corsair XMS DDR400 (already have these)
2x Geforce 7800 GT 256mb (running SLI) (will probably upgrade again Q4 '06 when new stuff's out)

Yep

I've a very similar system to that (more RAM though) and a similar experience.

I am thinking of adding another machine to my collection, which likely would run Vista (though I may initially install XP Pro on it).

I agree, I am planing and saving for a new PC with dual core AMD, 2.2 and what ever graphic card is the best deal (money versus performance) at the time. I havent so far been able to deside for Opteron or Athlon, I need to do some more price/performance research on that topic, pluss compatability with older 32 bit SW.

My current system is pretty good, barely 1 year old, 3.6 Ghz HT P4, but motherboard has poor support for graphic cards, only one PCI x with little space around limiting choices for a better card.... So I am not sure what the future holds for my bank account..

FSX will run 64bits and most likely dual core, if not at least you can run your other FS related programs in another core. So more power to the people!!

I looked at Bill Gates keynote at the CES last night http://www.microsoft.com/events/executives/billgates.mspx

and one part of it was a demo of Vista and FSX (just position yourself around 24 minutes injto the webcast to see that part), it is said that you don't need Vista, but with vista you will get better graphics. Hopefully FSX will come with options for no or full graphics depended on your PC hardware.

I'd like to know what kind of hardware they were using on the demo ...

Your current machine should serve you well enough for several years to come.

If you don't like it you can always send it to me  Wink

My current machine should be fine, i'm planning some minor upgrades before it comes out anyway.

My spec is:

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ overclocked to 2200MHz
1GB Geil Dual channel RAM (might pickup another gig)
ATi X800 pro
MSI K8N Neo 4 Platinum w/ nforce 4.

I think that'll do for FSX as it handles LHR pro with 100% traffic with ease.

I plan on getting a new computer but it's not just for FSX. I've had this since 2001; it has a 32mb video card, 384mb ram, and 1ghz. FS9 runs fine on it, but I'm sure the new computer will be many times faster and better!

In normal flight depending on the area, 40-70. Around busy airports with complex scenery liike LHR pro, 10-20 depending on how much AI is in screen. For the most part it handles FS very well, it's smooth and slideshows only occur with badly coded scenery.

BTW,
my system runs FSIM at 12-30 FPS, fairly constant
I think I have a very silly motherboard, even if it is HP/Compaq.

I have an X800XT PE, and that helps a lot off course!

Might invest in a new computer and operating system. Of course it depends on the cost of the project.

Im not gonna go out and spend anything on hardware until Vista and FSX prove themselves. We already know Vista is going to need a good graphics card to render all of the new effects. Im probally going to invest in my guitar instead of a new computer, because I can buy some nice humbuckers tomorrow, and they wont be deemed obsolete the next week.

I read from one of the FSdevelopment team that they were using a Dell precision 380 workstation with 2 Gb ram and a X850 video card w 512Mb ram for the Vista and FSX demo at CES.

"In the meantime I worked to acquire the machines we were to use. After several false starts I finally settled on two Dell Precision 380's I got on loan from the Vista demo team. They came with 2GB of RAM and an ATI X850 video card with 512MB of memory. I installed a recent build of Windows Vista and the chosen build of FSX and off we went. Everything had to be finished, tested and buttoned-up by December 19th so the machines could be boxed and shipped to Vegas. As you'll see in the next installment, Flight Sim was just a tiny part of the overall scheme."

I would probably upgrade mine if i needed but i think what i have now will probably run FSX and Windows Vista pretty well.

I'm sitting on a HP machine with the following config:

P4 3,6Ghz
1536mb ram
GF7800 GTX 256Mb
23" Wide flatscreen

If any of the two demand better machinery to be run on then i'll be seriously damned.
