First of all, I will list some of the basics, such as good download sites etc. If you scroll down, you will find the new 'Hidden Gems' list.

Graphics Tips:

Graphics depend upon your graphics card settings. You can make a number of changes to the card settings and within in flight sim.

Your graphics card can be found by following these steps:
Right click while on your desktop, and click properties, then settings, then advanced. Your graphics card tab is the top right one.

You need to make sure you have your Antialiasing settings as HIGH as they will go. Also, make sure your Anisotropic Filtering is also as HIGH as it will go. I'm not sure where you will find these settings, so look about. Might be under "Performance and quality" or "Display settings" or something like that.  Smile

Now it is time to open up flight sim.

In FS2004, go to: Settings/Display/Hardware

In here, make sure that the Render to texture / Transform and lighting are all TICKED.

Also, make sure you have Trinilear filtering and 1024x768 for your resolution.

Mip Mapping = 8
Hardware-rendered lights = 8

Also, if you can on your scenery display page, try to have your sliders near the maximum. << This might effect your frame rates.

Have fun!

I believe FS Planet are hosting files from various freeware authors regardless of them asking nicley to remove them. Some authors like to have files only hosted on a small number of sites (so they can keep track of Downloads etc...).

I may be wrong though.

Anyway, Great list.

You missed the biggest one... they have SOLD freeware addons on CD without asking the authors for permission, nor compensating the authors.

Here are a few more that I think should be on the list.

AI Models (of the framerate friendly sort)
http://www.ai-aardvark.com/
Excellentrnlow-poly models including the 727, 737, 747, 757, 767 aircraft familiesrnplus the DC-9 family from the DC9-10 to the MD-90. They also have the EMB 120, 170, and 175 as well as a Tu-204/214.

http://www.evolveai.com/
Airbus A321, ERJ-145, and DC-10 series. The rest of the A32X family as well as the ERJ-135 and ERJ-140 are very likely in the works.

http://members.at.infoseek.co.jp/FSpainter/works.htm
Although the models aren't as framerate friendly as they could be, the detail on the FSPainter models is great. FSPainter offers models of the entire Airbus product line as well as the 777 family.

http://www.jbai-aircraft.com/
Lots of bizjetsrnincluding the Lear 40, 45, and 60. Global Express and Challenger 600rnset of models are in the works. There is also an MD-90, VC-10, andrnHS-125 Dominie T1 available.

http://htaimodels.com/
Henry Tomkiewicz's website has a great variety of models including F-16s, most Beech and Cessna Twins, older Learjets and old and new Gulfstreams. His $15 Cessna single engine package includes 57 separate models and comes with paints and flightplans. It's very much worth the package since you can dump the default Cessnas from your default traffic. A single engine Piper package is in the works. Make sure you check out his new Gulfstream V model!

http://81.208.92.5/dee_cp/fs_projects/
A large variety of models. Lots of older aircraft such as DC-8s and 707s as well as a Comet and Caravelle.

AI Packages (that include models of the framerate friendly sort)
http://www.ultimatega.com/
Provides complete GA AI packages including paints, models, and flightplans. Install is a snap. Packages include Lear 45s, G-IIIs, G-IVs, Beech F90s, Cessna 402s, and a BBJ package among many others.

http://www.world-of-ai.com/
A group providing packages in a similar style to Project AI but using third-party models to provide the best framerates.

Cheers, Gofly. I've tried a few water effects but none were as good as fs9wat. It looks a little odd from high altitude but I haven't even looked to see if there's any configuration that can be done.

FSAutoStart has also done a better job than other utilities I've tried.

Cheers.

Peter Wildings free water effects did the trick for me, its at flightsim.com its version 16

its the free version of FSwater, high altitude is fixed and no pulsing. its nicely done.

but to be aware, the extended terrain textures can not go more than 60 miles so you will never see rendering past 60, so you always will see the 60 mile square around your plane in spot view. my range is always set at 100 miles cause I like to see mountains far away especially on a clear day in Arizona.

Does anybody know if there is any way to configure FS9 so that it starts up using the fast transition on the spot view instead of the gradual transition?

Erick Cantu is still making planes... but currently no plans to update any of the DC-9/MD-80/90/95 range. We will soon have most of his works up on that site.

I mean 60m visibility seems unrealistic on a clear day in on land, usually it looks more realistic set at 100m atleast to see the expanse of the desert and mountains in the horizon.

Gofly, your list has pushed me into "upgrading" my flight sim.

I finally got the water effects installed...very nice....plus a few others.

I'm having trouble with my FRA scenery...low FPS.

oh well, i'm still having fun with my FS.

The L-1011 looks amazing!! I'll have to take her for a spin when I get home.

The new Vistaliners L-1011. Already the best freeware L-1011 out there!

but to be aware, the extended terrain textures can not go more than 60 miles so you will never see rendering past 60, so you always will see the 60 mile square around your plane in spot view. my range is always set at 100 miles cause I like to see mountains far away especially on a clear day in Arizona.

You want mountains? Go to avsim.com and search for FSGenesis. Their 30m terrain data for the entire conus is on avsim. This is typically payware, but I downloaded the entire US and installed it. Boy did it make a difference!

It is FS2004. I have a download I found on this very thread which gives the aircraft a glossy look to it. What I think you are seeing is reflections.

Does anyone know where I can find water spray effects for aircraft when its rainy, so when you rotate, water will fly everywhere?

Kind like this Big grin

As far as I'm aware, non exist. The only way to do it, would be to take a screenshot and edit it in in Photoshop.  Smile

Is there any addons that have taxiway tire marks (The rubber left behind when a plane turns on the taxiway)? I've been looking all around for one but my luck is limited when finding things at avsim so please help, Thanks

Lighten up while you still can, don't even try to understand, just find a place to make your stand and take it easy

Usually specific to the scenery, therefore it depends if the scenery you download includes those textures.  Smile
