yup, I get everything over my house, from 747's to priv jets mainly from luton airport and heathrow i, but they are normally just reaching 10K ft but then i get some that are real high up in the 30's,quite often theres lil prop aircraft like cessna's coming over from cranfield, just as im writing this a A320 has just flown over! my office window is one of htem big curved ones so i get a huge view of the sky.

Hey Ba757,
Yep, we do it all the time. My son and I will go out on the patio and just stare into the sky.
We are 12 miles from MDT (Harrisburg Int'l, Pa) and we have a lot of traffic that passes overhead, especially, when they are taking off of 13. Most of the time, when they come over the house, there are aboout 5-7000 feet. We always know when the UPS DC8's or FX 727's are overhead!
Also, our house is directly in the flight path for inbound heavies, from Europe, into IAD. IAD is about 75 miles away, so most of the aircraft are decending. They are still at least 12-15000ft when passing. but they are low enough to ident, at least with binoculars. We can also catch arrivals to BWI, DCA, and eastboaunds to PHL, EWR, JFK.
We also see a lot of flyover traffic, westbound from PHL, EWR, JFK, etc.
Sometime, we see southbound traffic from places like MSP, YYZ, and DFW. We'll check flightaware and see where they're headed. Mostly to Florida or the Carribean.
We do have lot's of fun, just watching.
I just need to get a laptop with a wireless connection, so I can check flightaware, without having to run inside! rotfl

They are very eay to spot, you know, red tail and all.
Also easy to spot here, are WN (orange), B6(blue tail), US(at least w/ the old color). Most of these you can pick out with the naked eye.
The inbounds to IAD are harder to ident, without binoculars.
I remember one day last summer, we were here at the office, out front, enjoying the sunshine, and a BA 777, inbound to IAD flew overhead.
I could see it as clear a day! Never saw one that low, this far out before.
What a beauty she was though!

I live right near 1B9 which is about 30 miles south from KBOS, under the approach path for 4R, and as far as in-cruise flights go, I am under the big skyway over BOS. flights over me are usually headed to JFK, EWR, IAD, PHL, or any other big east coast destination. Aircraft? A330s, A340s, A310s, 747s, 757s, 767s, 777s, and business jets. i sit out on the deck with my scanner, map and binochulars, and tune into Boston Center. planes headed to JFK/EWR usually start to descend over us. the list of variuos airlines is long, but the most commmon are BA, AA, UA, CO, DL, VS, LH, AF, US etc. etc. the most exotic is the rare Thai A345 and SQ A345. there is also royal jordainian, aeroflot, TAP, SAS, and the lst goes on. A lot of times on a clear day u can see up to 10 contrails, most headed south and 2-3 headed west. I could go on with a lot of sightings which are rare for here. (somewhere like heathrow and the exotics are lined up for miles) it is so great to here "...Virgin 45, cleared to FL290, maintain 290 kts..." and then be looking at the plane thats communicating at FL730. In the evening it goes from european arrivals to mixed to all east coast departures. (during the day planes come in from europe, then reverse on the evening/night flights back) it cool to see the same plane headed north at FL370 that u saw going south 3 hours earlier at FL360. When the planes come for the BOS Approach to 4R, they are usually around 8000ft. generally east coast traffic. heres a link to a radar i use for the boston are. also, quite a bit GA traffic due to 1B9 which is my home airport....

Happy spotting!

I live under the approach for 31 in OKC. And under the Base leg for Rwy 35R in OKC. I see bunches of RJ's and I sit in my lawn chair in the yard with a scanner and binoculars and tune OKC Tower. I see bunches of heavies at Cruising altitude. Most planes in the sky above me are headed to DFW,HOU,IAD,MCI, and most East and West destinations like SLC, LAX, ATL, MCO, JFK etc. They all use the OKC VOR to Navigate so there is always a plane flying over my house!

Not so much here in Olympia, but back at my parent's house in Redmond there's plenty of traffic heading into/out of YVR to spot at cruise altitude. If I happen to be down on the coast, there's usually plenty of CA-ANC freighters and even some CA-Asia flights to spot.

I'm living in London right now (away from home in the USA), and I'm in central London.

Every day, whether I'm on campus at King's College London (Guy's Hospital campus) or in Bloomsbury, I look up whenever I hear a jet overhead.

Over London, most planes are low enough to identify with the naked eye, because they are going around to approach LHR or LCY.

I do my share of bino spotting contrails.............fun to try to ident!!
we get quite a bit of trancon over MSP...and I'm directely under apppraoch path for the 12's here, 2900-500ft over my house depending on weather.

I love spotting contrails near sundown as many seem to appear and/or easier to spot that time of day.

I am always blown away when I go to ORD............you not only have numerous planes following each other, but sometimes I've seen 4-6 contrails going easterly and 4-6 westerly all at once.......what a sight.

I am only using 7x50's and they work pretty well. sometimes i use my 400mm lens on the camera, little tougher to hold steady.

Let's here what anyone else is using for bino's

I have 12 x 50 binoculars. They work pretty well. I can usually ident up to about 25000ft without to much difficulty. I will usually consult flightaware, just to confirm.
Some are easier then others, ie: NW, BN6, WN, are quite easy to ident. Others, like UA, BA, USAir (new colors) are a bit harder because, from underneath, they all have blue bellies!

Sorry about the double post above. Mods, please feel free to delete the duplicate.

Back on topic, as I was coming to work this morning, I could tell it was the Monday morning push at PHL and EWR. As I took my son to school, there was about 30 contrails, criss-crossing the morning sky.
Oh, to have a day off today!

Every morning I look out the window and see loads of contrails. I live in North West London and the sky is never empty of them. I often see 747s, A340s and loads of FR 737-800s.

i think UA is darker blue underneath and more of it whereas ba has less blue . AA and UA(OLD colors) are very difficult to spot. can anyone compare UA and BA?

Yes, this is true, and sitting at the terminal, it's very easy to tell. But when you are underneath, looking 30000+ ft in the air, it's not so easy to tell them apart.

Quoting Ba757gla (Reply 18):

On UA, the dark blue covers the whole bottom, and up the sides, to the window line. On BA, the dark blue covers the whole bottom, but doesn't come up as high on the sides.
But, as I said, from underneath, it's pretty similar.

quite a few trails here about 10 am til noon and at sunset we usually get the later east to west coast flights.

Fun to listen to High altitude stuff.........we do get some europe-wst coast quite a bit, AC to US points, alot of cargo from ORD to ANC. Really just about anything and everything. Even NWA to DTW 747's from Asia fly over here quite reg. Mpls Center does cover quite a bit of the upper midwest.

I really enjoy this part of the hobby! Another favorite is plane spotting out the window while flying!

My house sits almost directly under the SADDE6 arrival into LAX, just high enough to grab the end of a decending contrail and assist with spotting. Being under the SADEE6 means that I get to see a lot more international traffic than domestic--quite entertaining!

I flip on my radio scanner, grab my laptop and log every flight that flies overhead when I'm lounging in the backyard. It's quite relaxing. Two days ago I grabbed a Singapore Airlines 777 Flight 30 about 15 minutes from arrival.. feeling nothing but pity for the economy passengers that had been crammed into that aircraft for many long hours. Big grin

Right now an Air Canada A320 is setting up for the SADDE6 - Flight 554, decending through FL250.
It only takes five years to go from rumor to standard operating procedure.

(Weather Permitting)

Low Level Spotting:

I live near RAF Northolt and see Bus. jets everyday (there's sometimes a Boeing BBJ that pops in now and again). And I also see the former Queen's Flight BAe 146. A Police helicopter likes to play around (sorry, practice) our area too.

Medium Level Spotting:

Heathrow is just down the road and I am guaranteed each time I look up to see an aircarft that has just departed or is making it's way to intercept final approach. I can also spot aircraft enroute to Stansted (passing LHR heading North-East) at 6000ft. Quite often there is an Islander CC2 doing circuits over Northolt at roughly 10,000ft. I bore all my friends by telling them what aircraft there are above us, but they have no idea what they are and just think that I make it up!

High Level Spotting:

Contrails galore heading in all directions! I could spend all day peering through my binoculars. I do like the way that most aircaft come in pairs on the same heading almost like a head-to-head race.

Is this it?

Yep, that's the one. It was re-painted a year or so ago from the red tail to the colour scheme of RAF Squadron 32, which is based at Northolt.

I watched it bring back Diana's body in 1997 and Charles and Camilla fly off in it from the airport after their wedding, but it is used by the whole family and PM etc. for various flights.

Normally anyone important coming from Central London will have a police escort, whizz up the A40 and nip into the airport and within 10 minutes they'll be taking off. Not a bad check-in and departure time!

When I was at school we were under the Runway 25(?) approach and I would peer out of the window during lessons. Not many exciting aircraft though.

Im in montreal and i see all the planes coming from Europe and going to Toronto, Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Detroit but thats if they pass low in Quebec because sometimes they fly using routes in Northern Quebec. And i can also see most Asia destined flights from New York and Newark.

Here's a picture of Cathay838 passing over my house at FL330.

We always know when the UPS DC8's or FX 727's are overhead!

reminds me of what me and my dad do. We eat dinner late 10:30ish and were sitting at the dinner table and we hear this deap rumble and I say Fedex 727 outbound for MEM. And everyone else (besides my dad) says, "how do you know that?" Is say, "Because thats the only departure 10:35 PM at OKC"

I rarely spot any contrails over my house, but I do see tons of aircraft while climbing after takeoff. And the place I live can become a nice place to see aircraft of finals for Runway 25, because part of the approach path is over SYQ.

I see them sometimes. I would need my binoculars to see the type of aircraft. Number of engines is easy.

Yeah, I like to. Today, I was playing a football (soccer as it is known in the states) game when I saw two aircraft with 4 separate contrails fly overhead. I didn't have much time to watch though because I was playing.
Boiler up! - Next flights: IND-MIA, MIA-IND
