Question About Making An Airliner DVD

Fri Apr 28, 2006 3:30 am

Would like to get some advice and opinions from fellow a.netters.
First, some background information:
I have been filming airliners and making inflight videos for more than 25 years. I must admit I have amassed quite a collection of interesting and unique clips that I would like to share with other enthusiasts. Examples include video made at the old ATL terminal, video made of landing at LGA in an EA A300, landing at Kai Tak in an A330, plus much more. My plans are to burn my very best clips onto DVD and make it available for purchase at some of the airliner shows, such as the one in ATL in August.
It may seem overcautious to ask, but does anyone know if it is okay to show airline logos and/or property in this type of production without obtaining written permission from the airlines ?
I seriously doubt "Just Planes" and other producers contact every airline that is shown in their airport action DVDs. (However, if an airline is in a "World Air Routes" video, without question permission was granted.)
Any guidance anyone can provide is most appreciated !

Go to flightlevel350.com and they have a program you can apply to sell your airline videos. And yes it's ok to show airline logos/property in videos with no permision.

Why do you want to SELL them ? Isn't better to just share your passion of aviation by setting up a website where enthusiasts can download them for free ?...

oh well,...

Alphafloor,
I knew this would happen...a question such as yours would come along. I should have explained this in the beginning. I'm "old fashioned" and I think DVDs are just more convenient for viewers and the videos are higher quality and more enjoyable when watched on a TV as opposed to computer screen. Also, the price was going to be low...just enough to cover costs. Too bad you assumed that greed was involved here. Cynicism such as yours was the reason I was hesitant to even post a question.

EAL1011, don't take it like that.

I'm also "old fashioned"... but on the web thing, remember the web before it was 'attacked' by all those money-maker ? Websites like airliners.net is what the web basically should be like for me. It is rare now to surf on the web and not finding a the end something to buy. My post may be looked I was over-reacting, but it wasn't the case. But I recon that when I read 'web' and 'business' all together somewhere I have a Pavlovian reaction and tend to be a little 'sarcastic' (not cynic).

I perfectly understand your point of view, I also do some DVD and I know it's quit a big work to do them and to a have return on this investment is ok. But I've found a way that is much easier and fun than DVD's.

Best regards,
Alejandro
