Idea For Small British Airline

Sun Apr 30, 2006 8:45 pm

hi all,

me and my freind, jon, were talking and we thought about how a link between the isle of wight and southampton or bembridge and possibly london city airport. we thought it would be a good link for buissness, commercial and lesiure use. currently, the link by ferry takes 20 mins, and the airlink would take 7 mins. charging approx £19. we thought that BAe jetstream aircraft would be perfect for the route.

what are you opinions on the idea?

if you would like to contact us on any of the below addresses, that would be good as well.

I don't know the area amasingly well, but i'd imagine it's not really worth the hassle when going to the respective airports. LCY might be worthwhile.

Why do you have a J41?

Wouldn't really work, people wouldn't want all the hassle of checking in, getting bags, waiting. Just for a 7 minute flight.

Are you sure that £19 per passenger could cover all your costs?

No chance you would make a profit filling the J-41 with 19 GBP tickets. Remember the pilots, maintenance, flight attendants, other staff all need salaries, probably you will need at least 20 staff members (or comparible outsourced people working full time equivalent for the operation) costing about 100 GBP a day each, that means 2000 GBP on salaries alone. Then the aircraft, fuel, parts, fees etc which will triple the fixed costs of the airline.
A full J-41 will only have a revenue of 570 GBP, so it would only work if you manage to fill it on an hourly basis. But I am sure you won't find that many pax for instance on tuesdays between 11 and 3 pm.
This is the reason short flights on small prop aircraft (check Eastern Airways and Aurigny) usually start at least at 50 GBP and there are relatively few of these sort of flights. Only FlyBe can be a bit cheaper but their smallest aircraft is now the Q400 with 70 seats, and economies of scale then start to be a factor.

jon suggested that, and i agreed. LS fly from MAN-LGW for £15, so i am sure a little flight for £19 could be possible

But LS does not sell all seats for 15£, the last few seats more likely go away for 150£ or so...

But LS are a larger company with experience in aviation and (I assume) a fair amount of cash behind them. I think a start-up with a Jetstream just wouldn't be able to survive with the same sort of business model employed by LS. Remember also that LS have B737s with a considerably larger capacity than a Jetstream, and only a relative minority will pay the £15 headline fares.

I would suggest finding out how many people travel from the Isle of Wight to central London each day using the train as step 1. Step 2, when do they need to arrive in central London and when do they need to return to the Isle of Wight? Step 3, how much does it cost them and what do they pay return?
Step 4, have a look at the costs - an indication kindly provided below.

And there is marketing/advertising etc to pay.

Step 5, having an idea of current passenger numbers IOW - central London and the demand distribution during the day, see the minimum price you would need to charge to cover costs.

If it's a lot more than the ferry/train return price, does not look promising. If it's half the ferry/train return price, it might be worth investigating further.

Since every page I tried is "under construction" I'd have to go with the information on the front page, i.e. that's a service from the Isle of Man. I'm sure the Isle of Man ferry takes more than 20 minutes!
