1/400 Die Cast Model Planes

Sun May 21, 2006 8:57 am

I have some 1/400 die cast plane models at home all are Gemini Jet. I am wondering can you inform me the details of others like Dragon Wings, Big Birds, etc.. are all as good qualities as Gemini Jets? Good paint details?

Thanks!
Frank

Frank,

Personally, I prefer the quality of Dragon Wings over Gemini. The most notable differences between the two is that DW uses plastic for the wings and tail on their models while GJ uses metal. While, again, it is a matter of opinion, I think the detail of the DW is greater because plastic is easier to manipulate than metal to achieve better detail. Secondly, the gear on DW aircraft are removable. With each model comes gear doors and a stand, so if you choose, you can remove the gear, put the closed gear doors in, and put the aircraft on the stand for an in-flight appearance.

As far as other companies go, Herpa makes an average model, which have good attention to detail, but are not as fine as Gemini or Dragon. Skyliners has only made one aircraft, an American Eagle ERJ-145, and it is a really nice 1/400 model (there is a 1/500 version also). Jet-X makes a good plane although their manufacturing is done by Dragon, so you will see a large number of similarities between Jet-X and Dragon aircraft.

In my humble opinion, here is the top 5 ranking!!

1) Dragon
2) Seattle
3) Gemini
4) Big Bird
5) Herpa

One problem that people seem to have with BiG BiRD is that the models are unlicensed and are therefore prone to inaccuracies in the colours. In addition, some of their models are at what some call "1:420 scale", meaning that they're too small to actually be 1:400.

The others are equal on my list. Some don't like Dragon or Jet-X because of the plastic surfaces, but like Max said, it makes it easier to put in more detail. Each manufacturer has had their share of messed-up moulds or colours, so it pretty much depends on how you feel about it. I'd recommend going to DiecastAircraftforum.com for more input.
