UAL 737 Custom Computer Case

Tue Jul 11, 2006 1:02 pm

Hello, wanted to share my latest creation with you all. I would like to thank Airliners.net for supplying me with invaluable reference photos of actual Boeing 737s with the United livery.

Its history in a nut-shell:
This case was made for my dad, who is a retired United Airlines mechanic with 35 years of service. He primarily worked on the Boeing 737s, hence the case design. I fabricated it totally from plexiglass. The Jet-7 is the only thing not hand-made. I even built a special vacuum-forming table for the sole purpose of forming the outer shell. The slimline slot-loading DVD/CD drive is hidden in the wing as well as the cordless keyboard/mouse's receiver, and the rear horizontal stabilizer serves as the mouse's docking station and charger. Also, I felt I had to find a pilot competant enough to fly my creation, so who better than Otto Pilot himself!
The entire project is documented in my worklog over on Gruntville dot com if you would like more information on how I built it.  Smile

Wow, that's amazing. I hope your dad was as stunned the first time he saw it as I am right now! Have you thought about selling these?

Do you think there would be some interest? If I can get maybe 5 people wanting one, I might just consider making a few more. I still have the buck I used to form the shell, so it wouldn't take me as long as the first one did (only a few months instead of six  Smile ).

If I could afford one, I'd definitely buy one. Though, you might want to leave the livery/type off and let buyers paint their own. Avoid legal troubles with UA/Boeing/Airbus and all..

You could make the 777 too.. that (or the 744 model) could be your UGM box

GREAT job Boddaker!

Now what about a 74F? You could use the nose door for loading CDs, connecting USB devices and so on.  Wink

That is way to cool! You should seriously consider selling this! I would buy one If I could afford it! You have an amazing talent which I think a lot of people would appreciate! You should make the computer for flight simming. I would want the livery to be Delta Air Lines though! I love the auto pilot from the movie airplane!

Thanks guys for all your positive feedback.

So I gather it is an affordability thing that will determine whether or not people will buy this case.
May I ask what you would be willing to pay for a case like this? Normal production computer chassis range from $50 to $300. If I can get production costs down to a manageable amount, I just might be persuaded to build a few more and paint them in whatever livery you want.

Again, I appreciate all your comments!

It does take up a bit of space on the desktop (it's 36" long), however, I did take that into consideration when I designed it. I made it lightweight so that if my Dad so desired, he could hang it up on his wall utilizing a standard monitor wall mount system.
