How Do I Use A Scanner?

Wed Jul 12, 2006 4:19 pm

Hi.
I have just bought a scanner (uniden UBC72XLT). I do not really have any idea how to use it. I have read the manual several times, quite throughly to. but i can't seem to understand it. All i want to do is listen in at my local airport (Christchurch International Airport New Zealand) to whats going on. i have got all the frequinces that i want and need. but i just do not no how to programme them into the scanner. Any tips or how to programme in the frequinces would be much appriciated or is there somewhere, where could i get it tuned or something?

first of all, how far away from the airport do you live? these things have pretty poor ranges, and work only on line of sight.

do you have the frequency you want in the display screen? do you have the squelch turned up on it? if yes then i imagine it's because you are out of it's tiny range. try standing beside the airport and see if you can hear anything that way. if you still can't then you know something is wrong.

I was at the airport this evening for about 2 hours trying to figure how to use it. i was within 50metres of live aircraft. i tried several frequinces but to no avail. although i did here something but not what i wanted to hear.

hmmm. and the tower frequency was in the display box? it's definitely not the range then. did you press the scan button and see if it picked any chatter going on around you? the squelch knob needs to be turned up a bit. turn it up all the way until you find something. and not to insult your intelligence, but did you read the manual? sometimes there is something not so obvious that you miss by not reading the instruction book.

My first suggestion would be to program the ATIS frequency. This will allow you to verify the scanner actually works.

The newer Unidens (such as yours) you can direct enter the freq. Type in the freq, press E to confirm and then press Hold to listen. Programming memory chanels is a little more involved and I prefer to use the computer/software cable to do it.

Another possibility is press the MENU button and go to Search For... select Service Search and choose Aircraft band. It should start scanning and will stop on active frequencies. Press HOLD if you want to stop the scan if you find something interesting.

i have figured it out. how to program in frequences, and how to search for them, but thanks anyway. thats what i did, service cearch in air band. i have been at my local airport all day today listening in to the tower and pilots, and i find it very interesting to what they say.
