Spotting Spots At LGW

Wed Jul 26, 2006 7:35 am

Hi all

I was down in london for the farnborough airshow last weekend staying at LGW travelodge was at the airshow friday and saturday and thought as i had a free day on sunday i'd go spotting so i hopped on the bus from my hotel and got off at the north terminal went to the information desk asked where the spectator terrace was and was told that it had been closed i then try ed the car park roof in the north terminal then went to the south terminal (by the terminal transit wow i wish we could have one @ MAN its so good) try ed the top of the car park roof there but you can only see the end of the runway there so i just hopped back on the bus from the hotel

but then the next morn i decided to walk to the airport for my flight (when i say decided i mean i forgot to have the £3 for the bus and the bloody cash machine at the hotel was out of order) and joined the south perimeter rd at the maintenance area entrance ending up walking past the end of the runway where there was a spotter standing there with his binoc's out looking at aircraft

Is that the best spot or is there better spots in the area?

I'd just like to know for the next time i'm down there with a day free where are the best spots

You might get a better answer by dropping by the photography forum and ask in there. I'm sure there's a lot more knowledgeable folks there than in the hobby forum.

Here you go Ruone...

Official spotting point:
Roof Terrace
Shut, probably indefinately

Other Spotting Locations
08R Crash Gate
Probably the most popular spot at Gatwick, it's excellent for shooting aicraft taxing and holding for departure from 08 (and as a result is only available 30% of the time). The spot provides several different angles depending on where along the crash gate you shoot from. If a ladder is used please take it down after you have taken your shot.

26L - Inner Perimeter Road
The best place to be when 26L is in use, which is about 70% of the time. Provides good landing views and picture opportunities. Very limited shots of ground activity although it is possible through a fence.

South Terminal International Departure Lounge
Only accessible if you are travelling. Situated upstairs in the departure lounge by the Sports Bar, offers nice views across the airfield and runway. Windows seem to be generally clean, so photos may be possible.

Locations to Avoid:
South Terminal Short stay Car Park
You're very likely to be moved on by security from here.

Regular Traffic:
Usual for British Airports - i.e. British Airways 737s & 777s, easyJet 319s, Flybe Dash8 & BAe146 etc.. During the summer months (May-October) there is a large charter airline presence at the airport, including First Choice Airways, My Travel and Thomsonfly.

Other carriers include Ghana International Airlines, Zoom, Malev, Belavia and Ethiopian Airlines

See here for more:[1]

Facilities and Transportation
Busy railway station situated at South Terminal providing services from/to London and the South Coast, plus east/west services from Horsham and Tonbridge

Transit train between the North & South Terminals. Each terminal has short stay parking (albeit quite expensive).

Coach services depart/arrive from locations around the country, such as central London, Bristol, Brighton, Birmingham, Oxford, Cambridge and Norwich. For those wanting to combine a Gatwick visit with a Heathrow one, there is a direct link provided by National Express Coach 700 Service, which operates every 15 minutes. Journey takes approximately 80 minutes.

Some parts may not make scence as it is c & p'd
