FSX Is Here!

Tue Oct 03, 2006 6:08 am

I was at a local store today (will remain anonymous so I don't have to take it back  biggrin  )looking for another game and happened to run across a couple copies of FSX on the shelf already...and heres the kicker...they sold it to me!!!

I haven't gotten it installed yet, but I'll let you guys know as soon as I've played around a bit how good it is  Smile

That's a big no-no, selling a game early. Someone will have shit to pay if this is discovered.

heh...ok well it took about an hour to install...I've played a few minutes and so far am disappointed with how it runs on my system.

With Medium-Low settings I'm only getting 7 fps at BEST and thats with no AI whatsoever...

Granted, I don't have a top-of-the-line system...
Compaq Presario laptop
AMD Athlon 64 processor - 950 Mhz
768 MB RAM
Nvidea GeForce4 440 64MB graphics card...
With decent settings in FS9, I can get around 20 fps in congested areas and at cruise, between 40-60. I haven't restarted my system yet since install, so I'm going to go do that now and then see how it runs...

One thing I'm way impressed with so far is the sound! The 206 sounds absolutely AMAZING!

Ok, I've had some time to experiment a little more...

using the presets for graphics settings seems to make everything run a little smoother rather than customize settings for everything.

The missions are absolutely AWESOME!! My favorite so far has to be the advanced helicopter mission where you transport an inspector to an oil rig. As in the promo video, the rig develops a gas leak as you approach and you have to rescue three crew members from different places on the rig while it is falling apart! It is challenging, exciting, and the scenery animations are outstanding! Towers falling into the ocean, explosions and stuff flying everywhere..I'm pretty much in fs heaven right now  Smile

It's not surprising with that spec. Time for an upgrade.

I was worried when I first saw '7fps' but it should run ok on my pc with a few options turned off.

You're tellin me...I wish I could afford an upgrade!!  Smile

With my curent settings (Medium-Low preset + normal autogen, scenery and ~30% AI), I can get 15 fps (where it is locked by default) most places. NYC doesn't work so hot at first, but once the textures load it does alright.

I think once I play around with my graphics settings enough and get them just right I'll be pretty satisfied. So far for me (most likely due to my forced low graphics settings), the missions are making the game. It really does make it a whole different atmosphere when things are happening around you that influence what you do...

any screenshots would be nice!

Especially of the detailed airports.

One problem with getting the game early is theres no one to play online with! To me that will be the best feature (assuming it works well). Real people is much more fun than AI, doesn't matter how good it is.

Things like VATSIM are a bit too much for novice and lite users.

Best Buy's been getting brave with breaking the release date. Get your copies from the BB's that have it, because they won't be getting more since they broke the release date.

I spoke with a manager of Game Stop today, he just came back from a meeting with Microsoft. Microsoft isn't shipping copies until the 9th. Pics of the box in your house will satisfy my curiosity, until then, I'll keep believing what I believe, that being the release date of the 17th.

on a side note it lookes like FSX is going the way on windows, FSX requires activation.

by the way i got it from the BB by ATW

MS (and many other companies) often make it look like they need activation, but legally I'm not sure they can do that. It's often a way to make people who don't know any better register when they don't need to. I would avoid it - it rarely gives the consumer any benefits.

What do people do without Internet?

I wouldn't let FSX run off to MS servers if it didn't ask first (easily blocked with a firewall) to register, which is what I suspect it does.

of course I'll need to let FSX connect to the Internet for multiplayer. But I bet the MS registration program is separate - and easily blocked separately.

I went to Best Buy last night, to buy my copy, and they were pulling it off the shelves as I was there. I'm guessing that Microsoft has asked Best Buy to yank it off the shelves until the official release date (Oct.17th...)

Oh well, I guess I'll have to wait....

Man, Best Buy really screwed the pooch on this one. It was not supposed to be released until the 17th, but MS shipped out the gold copies alittle early. Judging by the fact that some stores have it stocked and some stores dont, the guys that work there dont know what a release date is.

I got it at Best buy today after reading this forum! I thought it would be too good to be true and felt Best Buy would pull them off, I didnt feel like calling, cause it was on my way to the bank. I saw the shelf and it was all full of FSX! I was tempted, but it was Deluxe I was looking for, I was worried that Deluxe was not there, I looked behind the standard FSX boxes and found nothing, but then I saw a BF2 boxes next to it and saw a gold tinted box behind them, and it was the DELUXE! I think someone else had hid it on purpose. I went and bought it without a problem, the total went to 73 with taxes.

I have to open box and try to install it now  Smile

I stand thoroughly corrected. Unfortounately the two BB's in town here are stuck with the Oct 17th release date, so it looks like another week's wait for me.  Sad

RE: FSX Is Here!

Sun Oct 08, 2006 2:14 pm

I finally played it, the default graphics that was given to me with my 3200+ XP and 6800GT was the crappiest. It was playable, but the settings gave me no trees and no terminals! I finally tried to set it to what I play smoothly at with FS2004 (I play FS2004 all maxed out) and its smooth except if I have too much traffice set up.

The graphic options to try to get it back to my FS2004 look, by adding the trees back and buildings back. (not maxed) It took 10 minutes to load scenery and the flying was very bad and very jerky. I was able to get my Meljet 747 working in it, but dont know what features were lost.

I tried it at maxed out, but I realized they had more options in traffic such as
cars, boats, etc. those were set low anyway.

I doubt I can really fly with it unless I have a new system sadly, but from the way it looks, I need a really big UPGRADE. It looked seriously flawed and my
graphics card was going to artifacts during load up. I could tell the new effects such as light bloom, lights would shine nicely, the water looked much better, mountains had shadows as well, a lot more trees and very dense, had autumn style trees, aircraft could cast its own shadows and reflections against itself. It did have some nice 3D effects added to DX9, I dont see any info about DX10 in the box and what that would provide. Says nothing about 64Bit OS and DX10. It just says Windows XP needs 256MB and Vista needs 512MB
15GB is what the full install takes.

I would say its a good improvement and has upgraded 3D, but a lot of terminals have been defaulted and some buildings do overlap some control towers at places like KIAD.

Also FSX does not like manual FSAA, you have to keep it on auto to work.

I have to stick to FS2004 till I have new hardware. But I am glad I tested it out for 73 bucks :P

What computer specs do those that have FSX already have? I am afraid to spend the $70 or so and not have it run the way that I want it to.

My hardware specs are:

Intel PentiumD 830 CPU (3.0GHz)
2GB DDR-2 RAM
256MB PCI-Express GeForce 6800
Soundblaster X-Fi

I continue to be confused as to why people with twice the PC specs I have (I only have a 1ghz Amd athlon, 640MB ram, and a GeForceFX 5900) seem to have the game run like crap all the time, yet I can nail around 10fps with most of the settings maxed or close to it.

My Specs

1GB Dual Channel DDR RAM at 400FSB
AMD Athlon XP 3200+ Barton
Geforce 6800GT 256MB
200MB SATA II Drive

Can only play FSX with lowest settings for flyable experience. That means
no trees, very few buildings.

I set it to MAX cause I want to get the most out of it and its 1-3 FPS.
and my card now gets purple artifacts on changing screens and loading
up scenery at first.

The bad part is, the texture on the ground at higher settings fails to materialize. Makes the ground look like a big sloppy MIPMAP even flying at
low speed in the Cessna.

A neat touch is my Meljet actually had flap tip vortices during take off.
Thats not part of Meljet and it was added in FSX as a default.

The commercial planes are not as good as the latest FS2004 jets you can get. Its MS junk as usual.

I was appalled to see some terminal buildings cutting into control towers and not lining up.

I meant I went to MAX as in custom settings and setting weather to medium high and display to 100miles  Smile Thats my FS2004 setting. and I set it at 1280x1024  Smile Also my FS2004 setting. I think I went a bit too far at adjusting it. thats why the guys with less performance than me must be playing better. I went a bit higher in settings probably. I will try to reduce it to 1024x768 for now, I have a 21" screen anyway.

I cant seem to find walk and follow in FSX, its same old spot plane as FS2004, They said they would have some wing view set up, where you could get the wing view you wanted. I have Walk and Follow for FS2004 and I really enjoy that feature and read somewhere that FSX would have its own version of Active Camera.

I played the demo version on my system I was getting 10-15fps on everything maxed out setting. but demo was on SXM and it's pretty low-poly area compaired to places like NYC. anyways my current spec is

Core 2 Duo 6700
2Gb DDR2-667
GeForce 6900GT no SLI

game ran on 1920*1200*32

oh yeah and my best buy doesn't have them on the store ...

I guess I'll just fool around with the demo version for a while

Wow...I'm surprised by how many people can't find a happy medium for the graphics settings. With mine, it takes a while to load, but with Medium-Low to Medium-high settings, I'm still getting 13-15 fps at the least, sometimes up to ~23. That means a decent amount of autogen, water effects, terminal, airport vehicles, and some land vehicles. One thing that I did to really improve performance was to keep the clouds simple. It doesn't look bad AT ALL and with detailed clouds I was taking a 5-7fps hit.

That is all with an almost 2.5-year old Compaq Presario LAPTOP

AMD Athlon 64 950Mhz processor
768Mb RAM
64Mb GeForce4 440 graphics card

As for screenshots, I'm still working on getting a lot of them...plus they all need to be converted from bmp to jpg in order for photobucket to accept them  Sad
