I Want A Flight Simulator But I Got A Laptop Only.

Tue Oct 10, 2006 5:23 am

Hello all

I got a laptop with spec Intel Pentium M 1.73GHz, 736 MB RAM and ATI Mobility Radeon 9100 IGP Video card. (I am an idiot on these I dont know what these means) BUT I wanna know if this system can support me playing a flight simulator (FSX for example). I just want to play commercial airliners and I wanna fly from one airport to the other - so its rather simple. Do you think a FSX or something cheaper could do this job?

Thanks for all your help!

I have both lapop and desktop...the laptop is kind of a pain in the butt with the keyboard in front (if that makes sense) with the desktop you can move the eyboard to the side if you use a yoke or joystick....on that note if you dont have a yoke its kind of a pain anyways so with laptop its extra hard.....they have some rather cheap desktops that can support the game quite well....dunno if that helps but have fun! -J

Try getting Microsoft's FS2004 now, wait on the new FSX. You should be able to get FS2004 for cheap now(I got mine for $20USD).

I have a laptop and FS is just fine for me although I have never used it on a desktop, though it means when ever I'm not at home I can still play FS. If all you want to do is fly around commercial airliners, I think FS2004 is the best thing for you, then maybe if you feel you are getting the hang of it and enjoying it step up to FSX.

The laptop you have is quite old, but the main bottleneck is the video card - it's not just not designed for playing games.

I think FSX might not play at all on that. If graphics don't bother you, go for fs2004 or fs2002 and turn the detail down. It might work.

If you want FSX I think a desktop or a new laptop is the only way.

The 'problem' with modern games is they often require Dx9 Hardware features on the video card, so an old card often means the game will not even be able to start - it's not just that you will get lower FPS. This is just the way it is with PCs, and the only way around it is to upgrade.

It wouldn't surprise me if FSX needed at least a DX9 card. (ignore anything you read about Dx10 for that, that just confuses people - thats in the future, Dx9 is now).

Hello
Thanks for all your replies. I have tried to download the FSX demo thing and it is great. However I only want to play commercial jets like A340 or B777. I know my laptop is old so shall i just go for the FX2004? Whats the difference between 2004, 2002 and FX? Thanks in advance for your help again.

You can get those off of avsim and others but there is always extras you can buy. Like I wanted Battlefield 2 but my computer wouldn't hold it, now i am looking on www.newegg.com for more graphics cards. You need atleast one open USB port to have a joystick or (Recommended) CH Products Yoke, pedals, and throttle quadrant at www.chproducts.com. Let me know what you think of this advice!

I've got a 2.5 year old laptop and with medium-low to medium-high settings, FSX (the full deluxe version, not the demo...the demo runs great at max settings!) runs decent (13-17fps in most places) and FS2004 runs great at almost max settings (~25-30fps).

I've got a Compaq Presario 3000Z
950 mHz AMD Athlon 64 processor
768Mb RAM
64Mb nVidea GeForce4 440 graphics card

Don't know why he would have any major issues if he is willing to not run the sims at full graphics.

Evey computer will vary, but if the demo runs ok for you and your happy with it, that's the one to buy!

But Fs2004 has more free add ons......FSX will catch up eventually though. So it's really your choice!

To me graphics and multiplayer features make the world more real, believable but I understand people for whom the gameplay (more accurately in this case, the simulation) is more important.

FSX is the new high end one with very few add-ons. FS2004 has lots of add-on software. I get alot of my add-ons from www.pcaviator.com With your comp, i'd say FS 2004 is your best fit. FS2002 I think is out of production.
