When I am flying a free flight and I get close to the airport, how in the heck do I line up with the runway for a landing?
Just as in real life, you need to have an idea of the runway layout and where you are relative to it before you arrive.
I don't have FSX but I assume there is a way of bringing up the map view. On that, centre the airport and zoom in. When you can see individual runways you can decide which one you want to use and roughly how it's orientated relative to you. If you click on the airport, you can get details of the runways, such as heading, length and ILS frequency.
Another thing you can do is look at creating a flight plan before you start and follow it on the GPS, either manually or on autopilot. That way, you can set a waypoint that will set you up for your destination runway.
The bottom line is that you'll need to do some planning
