FSX Help

Fri Nov 10, 2006 5:31 am

I am new to Flight Sims . . .

How do I start out at the gate instead of starting out sitting on the runway in FSX?

When you type in the airport, in the bottom of the screen it says "active runway" and its a dropdown. Drop it down and select the gate / parking area / cargo areas.
Hold it . . . Hold it . . . HOLD THE FREAKIN NOSE UP!!

Perfect need more help though.

When I am flying a free flight and I get close to the airport, how in the heck do I line up with the runway for a landing? I can't ever find the runway to land. Btw I am flying with the 738. Can't I set something in the instruments for it to line me up?

Just as in real life, you need to have an idea of the runway layout and where you are relative to it before you arrive.

I don't have FSX but I assume there is a way of bringing up the map view. On that, centre the airport and zoom in. When you can see individual runways you can decide which one you want to use and roughly how it's orientated relative to you. If you click on the airport, you can get details of the runways, such as heading, length and ILS frequency.

Another thing you can do is look at creating a flight plan before you start and follow it on the GPS, either manually or on autopilot. That way, you can set a waypoint that will set you up for your destination runway.

The bottom line is that you'll need to do some planning.  Smile

Maybe you should start with a C172 and then go to the heavy metal?  Wink or maybe not.

File an IFR flight plan - ATC will line you up with the runway upon reaching your destination....

cheers

The last post is the best advice that I can think of. But in lieu of filing IFR, you can open the GPS panel. usually Shift+3, and that will show a general direction of the runway(s).

With your guys help I just made my first landing in a thunderstorm at MIA too! Can't believe I did not get involved in this sooner.

Do any of you have Captain SIm 757? What exactly is it? Does it just add a 757 to your aircraft selection? Is it worth purchasing?

i have the Cpt. Sim 707 and find it very difficult to land properly. Does that mean it has realistic flight characteristics?, i don't know as i have never flown a real 707 before.  Wink

I also have the Level-D 767. Great product and i feel is worth every penny. It's the machine i fly the most.

And congrats on land the 738 in a T-storm....nice job.

The add on aircraft are great! They have the systems so well layed out I sometimes forget that I am at my house. It makes the default aircraft look bad! You should wait though for add on aircraft just for FSX, I have heard that the FS2004 add on aircraft dont work with FSX.

Captain Sim did come out with a 757 for FSX. I went ahead and purchased it and so far have been quite pleased.

Little Update on Captain Sim 757

So as YooYoo said above the aircraft in CaptainSim is MUCH more difficult to fly, so perhaps it is more realistic than the built in aircraft. I am having a problem with the autopilot in the 757 though.

So when I fly the 738 and need to change my heading, I just dial-in the new heading and the aircraft heads for it. In the 757 it seems I need to steer the aircraft to the correct heading and then click the "HOLD HEADING" button on the AP. I can't get the aircraft to steer itself to the new heading. Am I doing something wrong? Plus I am frequently stalling in the 757 compared to the 738.

As you can tell I am quite the novice.
