For FS Improvements - Use A Registry Cleaner!

Wed Nov 15, 2006 2:40 am

Hi,

I consider myself to be pretty clued up on computers - I spent over six years working in a computer shop and I thought I had everything sussed !

I regularly defrag my hard drive, use MSCONFIG to stop unwanted programs running in the background, and use disk cleanup pretty much every day. I also used Checkdisk at least once a week.

I still use FS9 (FSX is gonna be an Xmas present - they spend £50 on me and I spend £800 on a new PC so I can use it  cry  ). Recently the program was stuttering whilst I was on the ground. Rather than cure the problem (with what I thought would be) a full format and reinstall I put up with the jerky movements.

Today I downloaded a free registry cleaner (http://www.abexo.com/free-registry-cleaner.htm). Since I last reinstalled Windows (in August) it found over 230 registry problems. Now that they are fixed my FS9 runs like a dream.

Whilst I am not saying (in any way) that to clean your registry will see miraculous improvements and will cure every frame rate problem you have (FS9 & FSX etc ), it may help you to get that little bit more from your simming experience.

I hope this helps you.

800 GBP will not give you a computer that you can use FSX with. Sorry to spoil your holiday...

Any chance getting more info on this?

What can be shut down when running either FS9 or FSX?

I took a look at it and there seems to be a lot of stuff going on in all the tabs.

Run the registry cleaner, tick all the boxes and then delete.

Items listed under MSCONFIG are being run by your computer in the background. Anything that you untick (in the startup tab) will reappear when you restart your computer. Theoretically you could uncheck everything BEFORE loading Flight simulator.

Intel Core Due 6600 £220.00
Motherboard £130.00
2Gb Ram £250.00
Graphics Card £300.00
thats £900 and I will utilise old hard drive and PSU which are more than capable. So, OK, £800 is optimistic but £900-£1000 should be OK

In a bit of a rush as I'm trying to land a 737 at EDDB whilst typing. Let me know if you need more info.

I would disagree with you. 800 GBP= Approx. 1500 US Dollars, and with 1500 us dollars you can get a damn good machiene.

start-> run -> type 'msconfig'

You can safely uncheck everything, although you might want to keep things like your firewall and anit-virus.

Any junk like realschl are programs like Realplayer running update programs without your permission. Getting rid of them permently means editing the registry unfortunatly but it's possible; best thing to do is not use them - they will keep coming back.

Some programs (like msn messenger) have to be turned off from within the program itself - just using msconfig, they will keep coming back.

I use CCleaner. It scans the registry for entries that don't point anywhere or have bad values, often due to programmes being uninstalled. When I ask it to "fix everything", it either deletes the faulty entries or gives them usuable default values. I must have done 50 to a hundred such scans each on four PCs and I've never had a problem.

Here is another way to get some extra power out of FS9. This helpful hint will help in reducing the blurries when scenery is loaded. After reading this post at the following link: http://www.pcaviator.com/megascenery/forums/index.php?showtopic=892, you will see a definite increase in the generation of scenery for MS FS9. I have followed the instructions and applied it to my MegaScenery and other payware/freeware sceneries. I tested it in the Denver, CO area with Kirk Olsson's F-16 and was able to see vast improvements than before the change was made.

No offense but if you don't know what the Registry is in Windows you don't need to be anywhere near it...either on your own or with the help of a tool.

The tool that I recommended http://www.abexo.com/free-registry-cleaner.htm
has an undo function, so I would suggest if you do want to try it, run it and reboot your PC. If you notice any funny problems, undo what you've done - then at least you haven't lost out.

As I said above, CCleaner has never messed up a good registry setting on any of my four PCs. It also allows you to back the registry up beforehand so you can reapply it if necessary. Someone who understands more about the registry entries for every application would be able to get better results (though it would be very time consuming) but CCleaner does a good job at the top level.
