FSX Physical Setup (steering Wheel, Throttle, Etc)

Fri Dec 29, 2006 9:24 am

I'm considering getting a really nice FSX setup. What do you recommend? For example, I assume that it would be much nicer to have an actual steering wheel rather than using the arrow keys on a keyboard for steering. And it would be nice to have throttle levers instead of hitting PAGE UP on the keyboard.

Same thing goes for foot pedals for controlling rudders.

Are there any nice controls that you recommend? Do they come separately or is there a good set of all three? Do they just plug into the USB port?

I am using the saitek X52 Flight Control system. It is a joystick with a separate throttle control that hooks up th your computer via a USB port. I quite like it and find it works very well in FSX.

The X52 has a neat little thing in where you can rotate it horizontally for rudder control.

While you're deciding on which controllers to get, you could take advantage of FSX's feature (apparently reinstated after being absent from recent versions) whereby you can use the mouse as a controller. It's not as good as using proper controllers but it's far better than using the keyboard. I flew the first version with a mouse and it's fairly intuitive.

Get proper controllers though!  Smile

I use the CH Products Flight Sim Yoke and Throttle Quadrant USB, and I love it! It makes flying so much more real, and I'm not really a fan of joysticks so I can't say anything about the Saitek, although I have heard many many people that really really like it. I know that for commercial aircraft, the Yoke is the way to go. Easy USB connections and setup, albeit a little pricey, they're durable and well worth it (Yoke is about $100 USD, and the Throttles are about $140 USD)
