So Anybody Have Vista?

Wed Jan 31, 2007 6:33 am

Just wondering if anybody brave enough out there has installed Vista yet and tried it with FS9 and/or FSX. I'm waiting for some other guinea pigs to try it before I do it  Smile

That says Beta. Was wondering about the final product, and if it works with FS9 as well.

Those who think they're going to see any performance boost in FSX just because they install Vista are in for a nasty surprise:

Read:

DX10 isn't going to save FSX performance either.

I think they're waiting for the FSX patch to come out to enable it to take advantage of DX10. That's what I've read anyways.

Supposedly, Vista is too young to tell (and to be a viable option as an O.S.). I guess time will tell when appropriate drivers and patches/service packs are released.

I have Vista Ultimate and it works fine with FS9. I didnt even have to reinstall it after installing a clean copy of Vista. I dont know about FSX though...

Hmm, that Tom's hardware article states that OpenGL was dropped for Vista.

I think MS is finally growing tired of OpenGL upstaging the crippled Direct3D (any version). If MS intends to keep DirectX in existence, they can either improve it (highly unlikely, as of the latest version....it still sucks), or they can stop supporting the vastly superior OpenGL. It's pretty obvious the path MS chose.

There has never been a version of MSFS that utilizes OpenGL, if it did then DirectX would be so extinct by now....(and all of you would be seeing a 50% fps increase, at least).

Not that I've noticed  Smile not really had time to play around much but i'm getting 50-60 fps with ultra high detail on the Aerosoft Frankfurt scenery.

I never knew that. Is there a possibility to download OpenGL separately?

IE. Microsoft stopped including Indigo software (I think that's the name) in XP, which was needed to run several games for older operating systems...I had to download it myself.

Just started using Vista and FSX with a new PC. Can't really comment on what the improvment is as I never used FSX on the old PC.

I've tried FSX and Vista at Heathrow and Innsbruck (as I've just returned from there on holiday) and got 6FPS and 12 FPS respectively with all settings maxed out.

An interesting point with regards to Vista is that it has a Windows Experience Rating (WER). It rates your PC on a scale of 1 to 10 - with 10 being really good. So here is my components and the corresponding WER.

Intel Core 2 Due 6600 (5.3)
Asus P5B Motherboard (not rated)
2Gb PC6400 800Mhz DDRII RAM (not rated)
Nvidia 8800GTS DX10 Card (5.9)
160Gb Serial ATA-II Hard Drive (5.5)

The Microsoft website indicates that for gaming, a WER of 3.0 or higher is sufficient.

I never had the sliders maxed with FS9 and my old PC so it won't really bother me to not have the sliders all the way to the right with FSX. I now need to start tweaking and experimenting and trying to get FSX to how I like it.

On another point my PC seems slow without using FSX. Start-up and general tasks all seem slower in Vista.

Microsoft... halting progress once more.

I intend to buy Vista, but I'm not using FSX or FS9 on it. I'm installing it on a separate partition because I don't want to risk screwing up my current FS more than it already is.

Sorry for bumping this, but I have some stutter issues in FS when I run it on Vista Business. I'm told this might be a processor or a GPU issue. Any way to solve this?

I am running FSX and Vista Ultimate at the moment. So far, I saw a small performance increase.

However, the anti-aliasing option still takes my framerate down to (literally) 1FPS, so I have to leave that option unchecked, just like in XP, in order to achieve about 30FPS...
