Should I Purchase Radar Contact?

Sat Feb 17, 2007 7:17 pm

I read this review from AVSIM-

http://www.avsim.com/pages/0206/RC4/RC4.htm

It seems really compelling to me. One pitfall of VATSIM is the lack of online controllers, and this apparently can bring a similar level of realism offline and without losing your AI and in fact interacting with it as well. It can work with SIDs and STARs and has an OTTO function so I don't have to sit there the whole time and many other advantages that I'd like to have.

However, it's $44! Do you think, based off the review, buying that utility is worth the money?

Thanks much,

As a Radar Contact user, I would say that it really brings a whole new level of realism to FS. I must tell you though that the use of SID/STARs is sort of tricky. You don't just file the plan and expect ATC to automatically let you fly the STAR. For the SID it's fine but for STARs, you have to select an IAP approach.

It really is simple though. Other than that, it works pretty much like the FS ATC aside from the fact that you have a co-pilot to manage the radios. It's also interesting when flying into other countries since they're procedures differ from the US/FS9.

I like it and highly recommend it. I've had it for a few months now and enjoy it thoroughly. It's pretty easy to use and much better than default MS ATC by far.

I bought the new version about 5 months ago and couldn't have been more disappointed. It was a waste of money. Of course, I'm a realism junkie and love it when VATSIM is staffed. So if you don't like flying online and don't like the FS9 ATC, I guess this is an alternative although I wouldn't say a good one.
