FSX And Antialiasing: Just My PC Or Program Flaw?

Thu Mar 08, 2007 5:14 am

Hello,

When I installed the demo version just after its debut, prior to FSX's initial release, I experienced abnormal graphics where autogen objects would be placed were they should not be, ie, antennae floating in bodies of water, skyscrapers in the middle of airports, floating automobiles, etc...

When FSX was finally released, I bought the Deluxe version, installed it, and experienced the same phenomenon.

I have since upgraded to Windows Vista, on a clean install. When I reinstalled FSX, I noticed this problem that I had involving both the Final Release and the demo version had disappeared. Now it seems, that my frame rate takes a massive hit when I enable antialiasing.

Currently, I have this option disabled, and am using the nVidia driver-supplied antialiasing which although is not as good as FSX, does provide something that doesn't cause graphics issues.

My question, has anybody else experienced this? Is this just an issue with my PC or is this an actual bug in the program?

Doesnt Antialiasing remove the jagged edges from animation, if this is true then it has nothing to do with objects being placed all over the place like you say.

It only happens/happened with the antialiasing enabled. I went through each part of the display settings and worked around with them until I found the cause of the weird graphics; which happened to be antialiasing option.

As you stated, antialiasing is supposed to make jagged edges smoother...but not with my experiences of FSX.

Keep in mind this never happened with FS9...

Would you specify which is your Graphics card GPU? FSX works better with 6th generation cards and up, like a Geforce 6600/6800 series or a Radeon X600/700/800 series and up.

Mine is a NVIDIA GeForce Go 6200.

I'm afraid that is your problem. The GeForce 6200 has not enough power for a complex game. Worst if its the mobile version. If all GeForce of any given family (in this particular case, the 6200, 6600 and 6800) were going to perform the same, then there would be no reason for making one very cheap (the 6200) one in between (6600) and an expensive one (the 6800). I would say that, this IS your problem, your underpowered 6200.. Since its a mobile chip, I'm afraid you won't be able to change it. Now, if you have a friend with a similar configured desktop, go and try it. But, make sure he's got something like a 6600 and up, or a Radeon X600 and up. You'll notice those problems will not exist in that machine.

FSX is a performance hog. It is not Oblivion, but it ain't FS9 either. For every new release of FlightSim, there's always an increase in system power (needing a faster graphics chip) and FSX has, almost, top all of the other FS releases, requiring much more performance power, than the previous version. I believe the last time we had such an increase in the need of performance to run a new version of the sim, was when FS2000 was released. It required kind of like a whole new PC to run decently, over what FS98 required. Same is happening now.

That makes sense...as far as the graphics chip goes, my PC, which is a Tablet PC, has the best graphics chip out of all the Tablet PCs available now.

Though I will admit, I am thinking about building a new desktop to replace my outdated, 5-year old, desktop. I will wait until nVidia releases the GeForce 8950 (or if ATi has something similar).

Which Tablet do you own? I am making my final selections to get one. I do have one on target, but since I live in Puerto Rico, there is no way I could order it, or have it shipped here. I was looking for the Gateway CX210.

How has been your experience with your Tablet?

I own an Acer TravelMate C314XMi, and I love it. Unlike a true Tablet PC, which are thin and light, at a cost of performance and having an internal CD drive, I sacrificed the thin & lightness for a high-performance machine (that has modular bay/internal CD drive & auxiliary battery).

I have upgraded my Tablet PC to Windows Vista Ultimate, and it runs even better.
