Frame Rate Issues, Please Help!

Sat May 05, 2007 11:57 am

I have FSX on my computer but the frame rates aren't where I'd like them to be...
(They max out at 15fps on a good day, and scenery settings are turned down.)

My specs are as follows:

-HP Pavilion dv9000 laptop
-2014 MBs of RAM
-AMD Turion 64 X 2 Mobile technology TL-52 1.60 GHz
-160 GB hard drive
-NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150
-Windows Vista Premium Operating system (32 bit)

I'm not that handy with computers and i'm at a loss about my problems... My guess is maybe a higher performance graphics card, but I could definitely use some advice. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

P.S. How much should I expect to pay for an upgrade? And which card, if my graphics card is the problem, should I choose?

Thanks again,
Eliot

First thing I'd do would be to make sure you don't have any other programs running while you are using FS. I would think your specs would be more than enough to run FS fine with the graphics turned down.

I do close all programs when running FS, but I do have a few games installed, FSX, FS9, and Battlefield 2, which are all large programs. But if I only had 1 running at a time so I wouldn't think that they would cause any problems, am I right about this? (Sorry for how naive I am and thanks for your reply Newark777.)

Yes, as long as they aren't running they shouldn't be a problem. Unfortunately, there are other programs out there that aren't necessarily big programs that can bog down your memory. I would open up the task manager (ctr+alt+delete) and view your list of processes to see if there are any large ones that stand out. A lot of the time programs are set to start up when your computer starts up and are constantly running in the background without you ever knowing about it. Firewalls and anti-virus software are a good example of this.

How much does a new computer cost?  Wink

It's not as simple as sticking some new memory in. To get an idea, read this:

As I was saying, though, I had a 1.6 processor on my old machine and it ran FS fine with the graphics turned down. I also second the Ccleaner suggestion, I use that program and it really cleans a lot of stuff out of your computer.
