How About This For A Model?

Sun May 13, 2007 2:47 am

Not being into models or sims, I don't come here generally, however I saw this elsewhere and thought it might be of interest, enjoy the pics;

Has anyone here got anything on this sort of scale?

I couldn't tell you what scale that would be, but I doubt it's a kit. I've seen several documentaries on TV about these, and they are mostly hand built from scratch. There is a guy in Germany who specializes in these large RC jet models, he's built many such as A330, A340, B747 and even a Concorde.

It's neat too watch, but I don't think I could get into it myself. I had an RC model when I was a kid, it crashed, and would have cost too much to repair.

Yes, near to me is West London Models, they've been around for at least 30 years too.
In the 1970's and 80's they were mainly about R/C models - they even built a robot dog for a popular BBC Sci Fi programme in the mid 70's.
Now however, they do it all - plastic models and R/C - after the premises expanded, but in all those years (I walked past it every day to and from school and pass it regularly today), I have never seen anything like the model in that link.

I would guess that those building and flying models like the C-17 (and LH 747 in the background), do so as part of a group effort, no doubt they've got their own website somewhere.

If I remember correctly, the ones the German individual produced, cost more than 10,000€ each ...  Wow!

I'm sure that C-17 would cost quite abit more than that, depending on the engines. The LH 744 in the background of one of them looks amazing too.

Wow, what a beast of a model! In one of the pics its right wingtip almost touches the ground while taking off... could cause some serious damage if that happens.

Wow! And I thought the FedEx DC10 in the other thread was cool.

Easily. Turbines in that thrust class are about $3000 each x 4 = $12000 in engines alone. Plus at least another $5 grand for the radios, landing gear, materials etc. I'm sure it totals very close to, if not over $20k  eyepopping

Wow. Crashing one of those would be such a loss. Would you have insurance on that kind of thiing?
As long as the number of take-offs equals the number of landings...you're doing fine.

In the U.S. you can get liabilty insurance for them through the AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics) and its optional, but I don't know of any full coverage provider Big grin

That Concorde has got to be the coolest thing I have ever seen! I'd love to fly the LH 747 as well.

Great thread!
