Survey: Airline Management Game

Mon Jul 09, 2007 6:40 pm

I have been planning to make an airline management game for a while, however I am constantly switching between the idea of making an online game, and a desktop single player game. I thought I would do a quick survey and see what people prefer.

1) Which would you rather play
a) An online game b) single player game

2) If the game went commercial, and you were forced to pay for the game, would you prefer:
a) monthly payments for an online game
b) single payment for a single player game
c) neither

3) For an online game, how much would you consider to be a reasonable amount for a monthly fee?

4) For a single player game, how much would you consider to be a reasonable amount for a purchase fee?

Any other comments about what you would prefer are also welcome. Thanks for your time!

Don't you have any real work to do fool?

Anyway .......

That depends ....... is the server for the online version going to do up and down as often as TWA?  duck

Single payment! The mortgage company, the gas company and the tax-man get paid monthly - everyone else can have one payment and like it!

Quoting Nighthawk (Thread starter):
3) For an online game, how much would you consider to be a reasonable amount for a monthly fee?

I suppose if I was forced and the game was particularly good I might be persuaded to pay £5 a month for it, but it would have to be something pretty special!

Quoting Nighthawk (Thread starter):
4) For a single player game, how much would you consider to be a reasonable amount for a purchase fee?

Again, if it was good I'd happily pay £30-£50, but it HAS to be good - if it's crap I won't be paying anything!

This is all academic anyway! As a drinking buddy I EXPECT to be given IMMEDIATE free access, with preferential rules in my favour!  Silly

If you can create something better than airline 6, I would be willing to pay less than 40US on the game for a one time fee, and about US5 for a monthly fee

You might think I am a little cheap but S$60 and S$7.50 dont really come cheap

Doesn't matter to me.

If there was a fee for an online game like that, I probably wouldn't play.

Up to 30 US Dollars.

Obviously you've never tried to do software engineering for free AND feed your family during the process.

Hey Gavin... just come do some interface programming for me instead of starting from scratch!

your comparing chalk and cheese here, there so many differences in business model that it would take hours to just list them!

Theres a certain stigma attached to paying for online games - everyone expects the internet to be free. People will quite happily pay £30 for a single player game that they can get a years worth of use out of before being forced to upgrade, yet they wont pay £20 a year for an online game...

Unfortunately running the game costs money, you need a pretty decent dedicated server, which will cost you about £100 a month to run. That money needs to be recovered somehow, and advertising isnt going to work in this case.

You also have all the time and effort put into developing the game in the first place... there needs to be some kind of reward for the developer to make it worthwhile doing it in the first place!

As long as it had decent AI.

While logistically a nightmare, I thought a game with the following basics would work -

a) population of cities etc based on actual population census figures
b) aircraft based on what was actually offered to airlines
c) real world past events are in the game (wars for example)
d) competition to be "AI real world" - ie - the schedules of past airlines are in there as your competition, but they will also react to what you do.

As I said, logistically a nightmare, but how fun!

Quoting Nighthawk (Thread starter):
b) single payment for a single player game

Absolutely. However, as the aviation world progresses, one wouldn't be too put out if they were to pay for data upgrades. Only pay the full amount again if the game was seriously upgraded a la FS.

Quoting Nighthawk (Thread starter):
3) For an online game, how much would you consider to be a reasonable amount for a monthly fee?

Small. The smaller you go, the more people will come on board. £5 per month in your money would be reasonable if it was good.

Whatever a top of the line computer game goes for. What, £40? $A100? If it was superb. It's all about the marketing at the end of the day - can't tell you how many games I've bought that LOOKED great but were shite.

How much are you worth? I'm doing the hard part already (the passenger decision models and the airline AI). I just need an interface programmer for now. (For those that are curious, here)

Dave, you've been dropping hints all over this place for months. Hasn't anyone contacted you yet to help program?

I'm not concerned. When I get to that point, I will be hiring actual game developers from game industry job listings anyway.

Definitly Online Game!

I would prefer a single payment, but FREE would be amazing!!

Good luck with your work, hope to see something soon!!

A. I usually prefer playing with fellow gamers instead of an AI.

A. I pay monthly for my subscriptions to MMORPGs so this isn't too much of a stranger for me.

$10-15ish?

$20-40ish

Believe me, I know. Having to take 2 years off completely due to very serious medical issues (and subsequent financial ones) kinda put a dent in the timeline. However, we are back into things and will be shopping for publisher funding soon. $800k to $1.2mil will go a long way to fund a AAA airline management game!  bigthumbsup

Not to hijack Nighthawk's thread... that was not my intent. I think it is cool that he is looking to do this. I have another guy who is a big fan of the game but is planning on doing his own sim as well. Actually, having all these smaller projects around helps me convince publishers that there is a desperate need/desire for this niche of a game/sim! So keep it up!

Competition is always a good thing, maybe not for us developers trying to reclaim our investment, but certainly for the consumer. It also raises the standard of the product, and if yours is good enough, the competition soon dissapears.

I do however have my reservations about your business model, I see an airline management game appealing only to a small niche market. Im not sure there is broad enough appeal to make a commercial offering, any such game would probably have to be self published or offered as download only in order to succeed. I cant see any publishers willing to invest large scales of money in developing such a game.

With your figures of $800k investment, you would probably be looking to ship 50-100k copies to recoup development costs. I dont believe the market is that large. Thats just my oppinion though, im sure your research suggests otherwise.

BTW is your friend looking at an online or single player game?  Silly

You would be surprised at how well the tycoon genre sells... especially transportation sims. Check out the Railroad Tycoon series, for example. RRT 2 came out in 97 or 98 and still had legs when the released RRT 3 in 2003 or 2004. They sold a ton of them! Count non-trans stuff like Roller Coaster Tycoon, Zoo Tycoon, etc. and you have a lot of money being spent in the business sim genre.

Also, a $1 million budget is loose change for a AAA title anymore. Some budgets get up around $20-30 mil. Obviously we don't need those resources.

He's doing an online one. He's from on here, though. Not sure how much he reads the board anymore - but if he want's to jump in, I will let him do it himself.  Wink
