Live SBS-1 Radar Stream

Sat Sep 15, 2007 6:39 am

Hi all,

My brother (who is a commercial pilot) started up a new SBS-1 RADAR stream from Kuwait. He also streams live ATC Audio. Check it out www.kuwaitstorm.com and go to Live Kuwait Airspace RADAR on the left pane. For the audio click Aviation Links on the top navigation bar then click Live OKBK Audio.

Join the forum too while you are at it  Smile Leave him some feedback.

Enjoy!

Not to burst your bubble, but it's illegal. Or at least it is here.

I wouldn't go advertising this around, really.

Is it like listening to airband transmissions, in that it's technically illegal but the Home Office takes a "relaxed view" of people listening in as long as they don't do anything silly with the information?

It certainly seems to be openly available for sale in the UK:

Its legal to listen to it, but illegal to transmit it over the internet. Im guessing as the ATC info from this guys site is originating from a different country it should be fine, same as we can quite easily listen to JFK ATC over here from the net.

Well, it ain't illegal here! Not any more at least. First everyone was like this should be stopped. But then...well have a read. The first article was basically giving info about the site the Arab version was MUCH worse, demanding he be jailed. The second article needs no explanation.

My brother was basically told by the Minister of Communication to keep going ad improve on the site! He is now sanctioned by the Government of Kuwait and was told that they would help him in anyway they can.

Beats the UK laws huh? And they say the Middle Easterners are backwards (incidently, I think we are  Smile, not in this instance right? You cant even do half of what he is doing this in the UK.

KuwaitStorm may start one; Danger seen in see-all aviation website

KUWAIT CITY: The public can now easily track aircraft movement at Kuwait International Airport through a weather and aviation website launched in Kuwait earlier this year, reports Al-Rai. The website, www.kuwaitstorm.com, contains information on aviation movement at the airport including military and civilian aircraft routes as well as live conversations between watchtower staff and pilots. The Arab Times visited this site and found the following on the main page but could not access the information required due to various programs that have to be downloaded:
Welcome to KuwaitStorm. com where Aviation and Meteorology merge seamlessly. Our aim is to provide live information for both pilots and enthusiasts. You will be able to see storms, track flights, view aviation weather including all flight preparation information like NOTAMS, TAFs, METARs, and SIGMETs. Live aviation information includes both a live RADAR screen and live audio ATC transmissions . As for meteorology, the main attraction is the StormVue and LDP. Do you want to talk to others about weather or aviation? Then why not join our Forum. Please remember to visit the FAQs to answer many common questions.

The website also sets the following conditions and safety guidelines:
* The use of the information presented on this website is strictly limited to your pursuing enthusiast activities (i.e. for entertainment purposes), which specifically exclude any activities that might endanger yourself or the lives of others.

* Under no circumstances will the operator of this website be held responsible for incidents resulting from the use of the data or its interpretation or its use contrary to this agreement.

* Providing air traffic data to the public is an exciting thing, but also attracts the attention of all people concerned about terrorism. We (the aviation enthusiast and professionals) agree that no more harm can be done to an airplane with the help of this service than with any other freely available information, such as departure and arrival information from the airports themselves, or a handheld scanner radio. Nevertheless, all access to this service is recorded at all times.

* No guarantee can be made as to the accuracy, timeliness, quality or fitness of the data for any other purpose than aviation enthusiast activities.

* Do not base any critical decisions or systems on the performance of KuwaitStorms live RADAR screen! You have been warned!

Pointing out that a Kuwaiti aircraft enthusiast created the website without the supervision of concerned authorities from the Directorate-General of Civil Aviation, Al-Rai daily warned the website exposes Kuwaits air field to terrorists especially with the presence of radar screens that identify the routes and origin of the airplanes. The daily added devious individuals can simply manipulate the information available in the website to wreak havoc in Kuwait.

In a telephone conversation with Al-Rai, the owner of the website stressed the radar screens cannot detect some types of military aircraft but reliable sources said the owner responded otherwise to the same question posted in the website. Al-Rai daily pointed out live audio transmissions between pilots and watchtower personnel are dangerous as terrorists can access these transmissions and obtain information to carry out terrorist attacks. Asked if he has the right to create such a website amid security issues in the aviation sector, the owner said everybody is free to use Internet space. The website will not affect Kuwaits security as it does not include a system for detecting military aircraft. The owner believes he should not be subjected to any legal action for creating the website since it caters only to aircraft enthusiasts.

Airport security Kuwait's top priority: Civil Defense

Published Date: August 29, 2007
KUWAIT:

Kuwait always did, and would continue to do all it can, in association with international organizations involved in flight safety to ensure safe air travel in line with international norms," he added. He explained that some websites that kept an eye on the activities at Kuwait Airport presented no threat to airport safety here. He added that the website, which was run by a Kuwaiti air pilot, was used by 'amateurs only,' and had no impact on the professional electronic activity at the airport.

He pointed out that similar websites operated throughout the world and added that his department had sufficient information on all such websites and had no intention of blowing the matter beyond proportions. -- KUNA

I think that would be a British thing. It is available (and legal) from Norway, Denmark and the Netherlands. I think it might be one site in Sweden too.

It's legal to buy them (My dad has one) but it's definitely illegal to broadcast that information on the internet.

It's actually illegal to listen to any broadcasts that aren't meant for you and that includes airband transmissions. But the Home Office have said that they're unlikely to prosecute anyone as long as they're "sensible". I'm not sure if there's a clear definition of "sensible", though.  Smile

That doesn't surprise me - no need to keep quiet about it.  Smile

Most of the links on that site show radar of Scandinavia, but the radar is a lot easier to view instead of kuwaitstorm.com which involves a complicated process to view the radar.

Yes, I prefer the ones you can watch in your browser too.
Unfortunately it requires some work from the SBS-1 radar owners. I hope there will be more available online soon.

If you know of more online radars, please let me know. I love watching the traffic.

The kuwait radar is awesome, but I prefer not to login via VNC...

Hahaha. Nice suggestion. Just be prepared to drop $1,000 for live radar.

It costs $800 but cannot be compared with SBS-1. Way much better, a far superior product.
