Making Your Own Decals?

Wed Oct 24, 2007 1:15 am

Despite repeated solicitations on my part, I can't get anyone anywhere to take me up on an offer to custom build some models for me.

So I'm going to attempt to go it alone. But I have a couple of questions re: the decals.

First, where would I actually FIND decal paper? What are some tips on using it. Second, I have located some 'templates' (actually high resolution scans of the decal sheets I would want. I would basically be cloning them). What would be the best pixel size in order to convert them to 1:200 scale so as to print properly? If I can get it to work, I might design some of my own.

Any other tips and suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you

Hey Matt, hows it going?

The best thing to do for scaling is to trace it in in a vector based program like corel so that they can be scaled precisely to fit your particular models. If you can't/don't want to do that I'd recommend just going as a high res as you can.

As for the paper its self ther are two kinds I've found. One for laser printers and another for inkjet. The inkjet decals are not as sharp and harder to work with. When doin the Aircal set I used laser printed ones, although I really had to sweet talk the girl @ kinkos, as she was afraid to let me put it in the printer. Both kinds can sometimes be foind at larger hobby stores, and online.

Doing good Doug. That sounds like more work than I have the time, patience, or skill to do-hence why I'm searching to hire someone to do them for me. Want to do another set....or know someone who would? I can provide the base models as well as the scanned template of the airines I want. As well as a decent $$$ amount for the whole job.

My PC can't find its operating system, and I've upgraded from abject poverty to mild poverty, so I'm probably out.

or

might be able to help.

What are you doing for this project?

Reno Air: Original color scheme on a MD-80, MD-87, MD-90, 737-700, 737-800. Also a simple but nice "fantasy" Reno Air scheme (should be simple for anyone who knows what they are doing) on the same set of planes.

AirCal: A new set using the decal template I found. Some of the old ones are starting to flake, peel, bleed, and crumble. Also, I inadvertantly damaged one of them. Looking for a 717, 737-200, -300, -500, -700, 757, and MD-80. If feasible, also a 727, MD-87, and MD-90.

PSA: DC-9-30, MD-80, MD-87, MD-90, 717. Both versions of final color scheme. Would also like A319/A320 in the final version with the horizontal tail stripes.

And anyone who's feeling REALLY ambitious: Western Pacific. Already have the seven that were done by FM/LP. I want the balance:

"Original" turquoise/purple N946WP The missing section of tail stripe was an error. Must be complete on model.

I would also like three other variants of the above three, but in different colors, for a "Braniff" type effect.

Well, I still have the PSA ones ina box somewhere, even if the decals are slightly yellowed, they might make an easier starting point than scratch if you try your hand at doing them yourself:

I'm very sorry to hear about the Aircal planes- is it mostly the paint, the decals, or both?
