ORD Chicago Airline Merch Store Closing

Fri Apr 18, 2008 2:18 am

Passed thru ORD yesterday and visited the famous (to us) ORD Chicago airline memorabilia store. To our dismay, I here announce they are closing their doors for good. If you're passing thru soon or live nearby, all items in the store are currently 50% off. Unfortunate, but there are some good deals to be had.

Sad, sad, sad.

I used to love that place - loved pawing through all the old timetables and looking at the old models in those glass display cases.

Yeah, I think so - in that tunnel under the Hilton. (Or at least that's the store I'm thinking of.)

When does it close? I don't go through ORD until mid-June, and I'm guessing they'll be closed by then.  Sad

Sorry to hear it's closing, they had some good deals if you knew what to look for.
The Airline Employee Store had been there since at least the mid 70's. It opened shortly after the Hilton opened and the tunnel from the parking garage to the terminal was completed. So it's been there a long time. There were always a lot of people in there whenever I had the opportunity to stop by. I too wonder why it's closing?

Try Grayland Station on Devon and Caldwell in Chicago. They are known more for trains, but they have a very impressive commercial aviation assortment (tons of models, timetables, magazines, old posters etc. etc., and A LOT cheaper than the ORD store.

Maybe retirement of the owner???? I met the owner one time and he stated he worked for AA in their control tower. That was a while ago, so maybe it was his time to move on. Just speculation, Keep in mind that the economy is not really flying high now either. Airplane collectables are not exactly high on most Americans' priority list. They always are for me though!!!!!

I'm going to be going through Chicago in a couple of weeks, and I'd be sure to stop by if it will still be open then.

Sad to hear that, I made my first visit to the store last summer while on business in Chicago, and staying in the aforementioned ORD Hilton. The person working (not sure if he was the owner or what) was incredibly nice and people where in and out quite a bit, but me and my friend/coworker were the only people I actually saw buy things. I would imagine rent in that location is fairly high as well.

Best of luck to the store owner!

Oh no!  Sad

I remember the only time I visited ORD, I was heading to the parking garage and on 7/27/2006, I passed by the store. I was going to buy a US E145, but I didn't and that was the last time I saw the store, and I guess I never will.

When I went in on the 17th there was still quiet a bit left but nothing that I was looking for in terms of models. I'm sad to see it close as well. It was also the first time I was able to compare 500 and 400 scale models and why I prefer Gemini/Dragon Wings over Herpa. For me, Gemini and Dragon Wings, Phoenix appear much more authentic in appearance. Just my two cents.

Abeam the Hilton health club.

I saw this coming, he has not got much new merchandise, heck there as some models for sale that where there back in 1995 :O Also he was sorta over priced. You can get the new Hogan models for UAL planes down in the UAL employee cafeteria for 3/4ths of what was the price for some of the old Flight Miniatures.

O well still will be sad to not have that to kill time at anymore since I am much to old for Kids on the Fly anymore  Smile

I agree with you, especially when comparing to Herpa.

I'm willing to bet his rent was less than cheap for that location, and it wasn't exactly "high traffic" compared to most ORD locations.

Yeah but see, he was charging more for 1990 models then the newer Hogan and Herpa's

Still is sad b/c less then 2 years ago he was a big booth at the GraylandStation show.
