1:144 Scale Pan Am Ilyushin IL-96M Model I Built

Sun Nov 09, 2008 10:49 pm

My 1:144 scale Pan Am IL-96M "Fantasy Bird".

I just completed this model and thought I would share a picture. I found an Eastern Express IL-96M up for sale on Ebay from a dealer in China. While the plastic parts were not too bad, the decals included with the kit were less than stellar. So I decided to create a "fantasy bird"....playing on the lines of what if Pan Am didn't close down in 1991and needed to rebuild its fleet with affordable aircraft. The IL-96M is indeed a "westernized" airplane, with American made avionics and P & W engines. I used two decal sheets from Minicraft 1:144 scale Pan Am 727 kits (I split the Pan's and Am's up on the billboard so I could splice together the parts of the words that didn't have the emergency exit outlines in them). I also used leftover window decals from various Minicraft 707's I built.

I love the results....a huge sleek widebody named "Clipper Charmer". Hope you enjoy!

You could have made custom decals to make the Bill board larger though. I make custom decals a lot for my models. you just use waterslide blank decal sheets and an inkjet

But its nice and looks cool, I wish the 96M was successful

That's a very nice-looking bird you have there. I love the idea of combining a Russian aircraft and a quintessentially American airline. At first sight, the aircraft looked like a four-engined Airbus A300. I remember flying on one of Pan Am's A300s and how sleek that aircraft looked in Euro-white with the familiar blue meatball. Your model has much of that same feeling. Anyway, congratulations on a very nice model.

Thanks so much to the both of you for your comments. Malaysia, I was thinking the same thing about the billboard titles looks a bit small, but chalked it up to a fantasy scheme on a plane never operated. I kind of like the look now....makes the IL-96 look really big. Do you have any more info on creating decals on an ink jet? Where do you buy whaterslide paper? Any info would be greatly appreciated! does indeed have a very similar look to the A300's Pan Am flew. I love the sleek looks of the Il-96's and have always thought they would look great in western liveries. In this day and age of airlines looking to save money, but needing planes at the same time, I'm surprised that nobody have taken a chance on the 96M's.
