Why Does FSX Keep Crashing On Me?

Thu Feb 11, 2010 5:27 am

I'm just wondering why FSX keeps crashing whenever I begin the flight. I can't even make it past the taxi stage before my screen freezes, blanks out, and this blue screen appears and then restarts. My BF invested a lot of money in this computer for me thinking it would handle the program but it's not.

Here's my computer specs:
AMD Phenom(tm) 9950 Quad-Core Processor 2.61 GHz
4 GB Ram
Windows 7 64 bit
ATI Radeon HD3800 Series
(Let me know if you need more specs)

If I lower the visual settings to low, it'll work fine, probably around 20 fps. When I start to up it, it goes down to 11-12 fps. Does it have to do with the video card? If it is the video, do you recommend a better one?

Also, got the PMDG 747-400X, looks great. Haven't been able to use it to it's potential because of this issue. But one problem I have noticed is I can't open the doors for anything. I've searched the internet, found some answers, assigned it under the PMDG setting to a certain key, and it will not work. Any suggestions? Also any good tutorials on how to properly operate the aircraft?

find the FSX.cfg file and delete it. then start fsx.

and I hate to break it to you but that PC just wont cut it for FSX.

i'd say trash the whole thing and get a Core i7 with 6gb of RAM and at the very least an ATI 57xx or higher video card.

Well, will all sliders at medium it will run, and it should at least not crash - the 3800 are DX10 cards, so with SP2 you should be able to run DX10 mode and have better frames there?

Crashes of FSX most of the time mean:
Bad drivers, update the video drivers?
Buggy addons.
You have FSX SP2 installed, MAY give a factor of 4 to 5?
Make sure it runs stable before you add ANY addons. Then add addons one by one and test.

if that video card is a 3870 or better it will run FSX just fine. i would bet money that the OP has cooling problems either on the CPU GPU or Northbridge.

There are quite some surprising solutions when you are doing field support like I do. A good one was a 1000Watt power supply that had to low current on the 3,3Volt to crash FSX under heavy load...

I'm sorry, but no, just no. I have TWO 4870s and they don't even cut it for FSX. But I put the blame on FSX's horrid graphics engine, not the cards themselves, as they are still ridiculously fast for everything else I play at max settings.

I see you're using Windows 7 x64.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I found this info at avsim:

For some reason, the core problem lies with the uiautomationcore.dll library in Windows 7. I can't speak for crash's in other OS versions, but from what I've read, its mostly with Win 7 (x64), where Vista and XP work fine.

The trick is to use the Vista version of uiautomationcore.dll and place it into the Flight Simulator X folder. Some said that you have to register it, but just dropping it in the main directory where fsx.exe resides seems to work fine. Also, registering it is probably NOT a good idea, because it would then force any program running under Win 7 to use that Vista version, and may cause a crash of its own. You only want fsx.exe to use it exclusively.

To my understanding, when an executable file is run, it will first look for any dll's locally in the same folder, then through its sub folders, then if it can't find it, the program will then look at the "system path" for it. In this case, the Vista version of uiautomationcore.dll would be in that local location, load that library, and ignore the Windows 7 version.

Note that its very important to NOT delete or replace uiautomationcore.dll in the System folder.

FYI, the Windows 7 version number of uiautomationcore.dll is 6.1.7600.16386 (733kb). The Vista version is 6.0.5840.16386 (155kb). Here's a link to the Vista DLL. http://www.search-dll.com/dll-files/download/uiautomationcore.dll.html

Just to be sure I place the Vista version in the Flight Simulator X folder, but temporary renamed it (*.dllx), and ran fsx until it crashed (almost a certainty). I then changed it back (*.dll), and of the half dozen times I've ran fsx, it hasn't crashed yet (see crossed fingers).

Good luck, and hope this works for you.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I tried this with my own system when FSX was crashing all the time and it hasn't crashed since. So it worked for me, perhaps it will work for you.

Good luck!

Edit: The PMDG doors you are having problems with, is it on the -400F? If so you need either both external power lights functioning and have one clicked "on" and leave one at "avail". Then the nose door and side cargo doors will work. If you don't have both external power lights on, you need to use the APU, same way. Leave one lit to "avail" and have one of them clicked "on".

Specifically, let the RIGHT side to be AVAIL. Then it should be fine.

Hi guys

My FSX kept on crashing on me loads, until I ran a command in the CMD function – I will post it later, but after I did this FSX has never crashed since, nine months and counting!

Was it by any chance regsvr32 something?

Can be quite useful.

Hey

I found by running this in CMD solved my issue.

Just enter

'BCDEDIT /set increaseuserva 3072'

You will be informed 'the operation was completed successfully'

the type 'exit'

As I said this solved my issue and also two of my on line friends issues.

My system is below:

Duel Intel Core i7 CPU 965 @ 3.20GHz 3.20GHz
Memory (RAM): 12 GB
System Type: 64-bit

2 x GeForce GTX295

Kimberly

Ps. The system hardly ever has any issues with anything that - FSX is ran at max (PMDG and add on airports) and UT2 traffic at max and still its smooth as silk. My dream system

Nice. RAM is overkill IMO though, but it definitely won't hurt.

Since it is used for caching if unused, it will help, and with an i7/965 and a GF295 it doen't hurt money wise either...

If you configure it correctly that is. And even if you eliminate the page file, Even with 1TB of HDD memory the resulting required cache size is just under 2GB. I have half her memory and have never ever been able to max it out, not even purposely.

And last time I checked a pair of those video cards and that i7 will set you back $1700, that more than what my whole system cost! Not exactly painless in my eyes.

At any rate, that's just me being nitpicky.

I have seen W7/64 to use almost 4 GB for caching when FSX was running on a 8 GB system. But my main message was that on a $1700 system the $150 to go from 6 GB to 12 GB does not really hurt, since on the -920 8 GB are no option. 6 might be enough, unless you have an AI addon with 9000 1024x1024 textures...
