FS/X-Plane Screenshots V.7 - Classics Edition

Sun Jun 06, 2010 2:04 am

Alright, since these threads tend to be huge it's probably good to split them up, so here goes one for classics.

For the purposes of this thread, regardless of time frame, a Classic will be considered as:

a) Any aircraft not currently in service anymore for a given airline. (ex. WN B727)

b) Any livery not currently used by a given airline. (ex. CO's Meatball livery) Current Retro liveries don't count.

c) Any defunct airline (ex. Braniff, EA, TWA, etc)

d) Rule A applies to military aircraft as well.

f) For everything else, if it's old school, then it belongs here

Anyways, here is my skimpy contribution for the moment, more to come later:

I guess this one could have gone in either the "classics" or "quad-jet" section, but I consider this bird more "classic" - a United 747 SP out on PHNL...

Wow. Mixed emotions here. Cognitive dissonance to the max. One half of me is thinking "Erik, that's sooo cool that you spent the time and were able to get it to work for an awesome shot". My other half is thinking " Man, that's kind of depressing for you to be creating a graveyard scene." But...hey, the reality of it all is....this is where you'll find most of these Classic Airliners. I am at the age where a lot of stuff I love is dying. Most recently I received a text message from NikV69 (awesome A.net photog) saying that N31023, an ex-TWA L-1011 which has been rotting in Kingman Az. for many years, was finally scrapped. I knew it was coming but I've visited her so many times to pay my respects, I'll miss her. Nick offered to send me a shot of the dumpster that replaced her. Smart-ass.

Jeez Granite, if it were any older, it'd have propellers. I'll tell ya how you can make it cooler.

Aer-D, we have to find a "Lockheed engine smoke" add on somewhere. Luv the PAX overwing view! How's the audio on engine start from that view? I'm a big audio lover with these classic ships. It reminds me of how exciting it was to be in a multi-engine prop during start up. You could hear the gear drive starters whining to bring each engine to life. Once started, the roar and vibration would tickle a bit. Everyone on board watched and waited for each engine to start. Often there would be one stubborn engine resisting to fire on first start. This really got people nervous. After what seemed like forever, a second start attempt. You could hear sighs of relief once all engines were fired up. You could also smell traces of exhaust and un-burned fuel in the cabin. Mmmmmmm.

Believe it or not, when the turbo fan engine first came out, a lot of PAX didn't feel safe because they couldn't see anything happening with the engine. No movement, no vibration, no conventional aircraft engine sound.

Dang, I am getting old. First, the 7-five and now this. Even the "Classic Rock" stations are playing REM and U-2. Next thing I know, Ultimate Delta will be posting an SP parked in a field somewhere.

Quoting granite (Reply 13):
............have to say a little partial to the UA 747Sp
Interesting story about that. UA got 11 SP's (along with 6 of my beloved UAL-1011-500's) in the purchase of PA's Asian routes. Not sure if UA had any other SP's. Knowing that they were going away, PA harvested all of the good stuff they could and replaced with spares. Fellow A.netter "Buzz" told me that two of these SP's were in such bad shape they were labeled "The Lemon Sisters". UA spent a ton of money on these ships (like the 6 TriStars) and they were in their prime while flying the Friendly Skies.

Apologies to FLY2HMO for my lengthy digressions but the classics are near and dear to me.

Thanks for that link Gary. I signed up as a member and downloaded some cool stuff. Now I see where you and some other folks get their stuff. I donated $25.00 for allowing me to pillage their library and they seem to have provided a lot of enjoyment for many of us here.

Careful Batman. You're tipping your hat as to which major airline employs your talent.

Quoting aerdingus (Reply 27):

Perhaps it may be more like what they didn't do. Providing Technicians with accurate and useful diagnostic and repair information may be one. What a nightmare it must be having to diagnose a system failure that only occurs @ certain altitude, temp or pressure. Sitting in a hangar, everything checks out fine. You can't take an A-320 on a test drive around the block to recreate the failure. Airbus builds the most sophisticated electronic systems in the sky. Good luck finding that one intermittantly bad contact inside a 64 pin connector somewhere in the hundreds of meters of wiring harnesses which only occurs after 1-2 hours of operation @ FL35. Jeez Batman...I wouldn't want your job.

Jeez Batman...I wouldn't want your job.

Oh, it's a great job...even with all of the chaos in the post- 9/11 aviation world, I wouldn't want to do anything else!

I guess this one could have gone in either the "classics" or "quad-jet" section, but I consider this bird more "classic" - a United 747 SP out on PHNL...

Love seeing the SP, very nice shot indeed!

Now that is a classic, brilliant composition on the screenshot.

Thanks to both of you.

It's from Alphasim ( http://alphasim.co.uk/ ) ...They have alot of really interesting military planes, although some are a bit higher quality than others.
