PC Upgrading For FSX

Fri Jul 02, 2010 11:45 am

Am beginning to consider upgrading my PC with FSX in mind, so looking at processors, DDR and graphics cards.

Currently using a basic HP Pavilion a6640a, with Intel Core 2 Duo E7300 processor, 2GB DDR (motherboard I think will allow me to double this) and NVIDIA GeForce 9300GE 3D 256MB graphics (yes I know that will definitely need to go!).

Recommendations please for replacements....

My ATI HD5870 has been great with FSX! I have a i7-930. No you dont need the i7-930 for FSX you can get away with an i7-860 but I would reccomend getting the best Video Card you can find. HD5870 is one of them.

Budget at the very least 1000 USD for this.

Take a look at these threads:

An i7-920 with a lower end HD58xx card will be much more than enough. However, an i7-860 with anything less than an HD5830 card won't be too quick.

Perhaps I should clarify...I'm wondering if it would be cheaper to replace the processor and graphic cards and add memory rather than change the whole computer.

Not necessarily. I was in that exact same position not long ago. It's much much better to invest in up and coming technology rather than upgrade something that's already pretty much obsolete, and with little room for future expansion. In the long run it will be cheaper too. Your system does not have much room for improvement. What I did with my old computer was sell it for parts on ebay. It was an old Pentium 4 system with every possible upgrade. I got nearly $400 USD back. Yet had I sold it in one piece I doubt I would've gotten over $200 for it seeing what similar systems were running for.

When it comes to upgrading, many things have to be considered. Does the power supply bring enought current on the lines you need? Is the cooling of the case appropriate.

In your case, the GPU is the clearly limiting factor, and more memory would help.
So either
a) add another GB of RAM and a better GPU with low power needs.
ATI5750 needs 86Watt, 5770 needs 108Watt, 5830 already 175 Watt, and the 5870 that is the best clearly 188 Watt.

Since your 9300 is an onborad grafic I assume, you must ensure you have this extra power as spare. If you aren't sure, dont upgrade.

or

b) buy a brand new system and use the "old" for the Internet ( or sell it ).

Hmmmm looks like FSX will be staying in the box for the time being! This PC is less than 18 months old and my good lady will go ballistic if I say...how about a new PC?

Basically your system could do it, if it had a GPU and not a 2d RAMDAC. If you could add an ATI5750 this should cost $150 and you would hav a balanced system, but the power supply must be able to support it.
