FSX - Worth The Upgrade Over FS9?

Sat Jul 10, 2010 12:00 pm

Hi guys,

I know this is a question that will have been asked before and from searching the forums here a lot of people are using and liking FSX. I'm still using my original FS9 at the moment. I use a lot of third party software upgrades, freeware and some payware. I do like taking decent quality screenshots and having high quality images. My computer runs FS9 maxed at the moment.

Given the above, would you recommend I try FSX?

Also is it possible to have FS9 and FSX installed at the same time? I was considering the possibility of having one set in modern times and one set in the 1970s!

Thanks for any advice,

Jessica

I'd say between Aerosoft Flight Simulator and the Cascade Game Foundry Group (the latter formed by former ACES studio employees), a new simulator will probably be out in two years.

Yes. During flight simulator version transition periods, I had two versions of FS installed.

I guess a better question would be "Can my computer run FSX as well as I'd like it to?" instead. Provided you've got enough hard drive space, you can absolutely have both FS9 and FSX installed at the same time. Thing is, while FS9 is incredibly demanding from a hardware perspective, FSX is MUCH more so.

What are your current computer specs?

I run both FSX and FS9 on the same machine. I was a hard-core FS9 user for a looong time, but now that I have a new rig I tend to use FSX more and more. If you are thinking of making the switch, you MUST have a machine that is capable, other wise it's not worth it. You don't want to upgrade to FSX and run it with all of your settings super-low...you might as well stay with FS9.

Another thing to consider is that more and more add-ons are for FSX only, and each new airplane that's released for FSX is getting better and better. So is making the switch worth it? Yes, I think so...but again MAKE SURE YOUR MACHINE HAS ENOUGH HORSEPOWER!!!!

Yes, I have it like that on my computer but I almost never use FS9. I like FSX more, the planes are better, the overall sim feels more real. But it depends on two things I say. 1. and the MOST important can you computer run FSX as well as it does FS9. Post your specs so we can have a look at them if your not sure.
2. How much of that freeware and payware will you lose going to FSX and will that make flying in the sim less fun and enjoyable to you? All I had was some Payware planes and freeware scenery and things like that nothing major. Sure I miss flying my PSS Dash-8 as much but really now that I have two very good quality made for FSX payware planes I am happier and I cant wait for PMDG NGX!

Well, I know my pc (laptop) can handle FSX, but whether it can do it really well? I was considering a desktop for FSX, I don't have the cash right now but I think it's something to consider. Also I'm quite happy with FS9 at the moment, it's familiar and i have a great base of knowlege and products for it. I don't know how much payware I'd lose out with FSX I'd maybe have to test the water.

My specs are:

Intel Pentium Dual Core T4000, 2.0GHz, 1MB L2, 800MHz FSB
4GB DDR2-800 RAM
ATi HD4530 with 512MB GDDR3 on board RAM
250GB 5400RPM HDD
Windows Vista Enterprise x64

I'll probably stick with FS9 for now, but think about FSX over the next year, when I can get a desktop sorted out.

Thanks for the advice!

Everything on maximum with smooth framerates and 4x AA, can get just slightly taxed at full on payware like simflyers JFK with 100% traffic but never anywhere near unplayable.

I've been running FSX on a laptop and on a desktop for a while now. Because FSX takes up so much memory, I loaded it on an external HD which also made it convenient to run on both machines. Initially I had a basic Saitek AV8R-01 controller and later added Saitek pedals. Then I added more RAM. After that I upgraded the video cards, Then I needed more cooling which required larger power supplies.

At this point, my laptop has every USB port occupied and cannot be upgraded further. My desktop still has room for upgrades however due to it's age, the next logical step is a new machine w/ an i7 (I heard that the price on i7s' is going down).

In retrospect, I wish I didn't spend money on the laptop and instead spent more money on a desktop. Especially now that I have multiple controllers and would like dual displays.

And, I can't stress enough the importance of sufficient cooling and power supply, especially with a laptop. I added a laptop cooling fan base which helped a lot.

Bottom line, your upgrade to FSX will only be worth it if your system can run FSX reasonably smooth. Otherwise, you'll be frustrated as hell every time your machine locks up on short final. Looking at the specs, your machine should be OK to run FSX with a low autogen setting. You will also find that many add-on FS-9 aircraft will run just fine on FSX with little or no tweaking. And, FSX is a memory hog. "Bare bones" it takes up about 15gb to install. You may need to uninstall FS-9 depending how full you HDD is.

Let us know if you make the switch!

I'm in the same dilemma. I have FSX but have now uninstalled it. My PC can cope with FS9 maxed out and with a lot of demanding add-ons. With FSX it grinds almost to a halt. I have gained opinion here about upgrading and am looking at some fairly hefty $$$ to fork out to make FSX worthwhile. To give you an idea of what I can still get with FS9...
Big version: Width: 1366 Height: 768 File size: 507kb

This is using freeware aircraft and scenery, yet still looks pretty good.

As things stand I get some pretty good screen shots on here with FS9 and some really good payware airports. So for me FSX will be waiting in the box. It's also fair to say that quite a few add-ons are dual-compatible FS9/X, though admittedly the more popular ones like PMDG are only FSX now.

Thanks for the advice all!

Based on above recommendations, the standard I can get with FS9, lack of a bit of extra grunt on the laptop and hard disk space I will hold off for now. If I get something more powerful I'll consider it but I'm fairly happy with FS9 even after 6 years! Must be the least I've paid for the most hours of fun... ever?

Holy talk me out of switching to FSX Batman!

That's an incredible shot. It looks like something from around my neighborhood.
