I know the realism junkies out there will cringe, but I'm a "set it and forget it" guy unless the flight is under 90 minutes.
Quoting MIAspotter (Reply 7):
On ultralonghauls I usually let the plane fly and go to bed...
Quoting united319 (Reply 2):
I even do a ULH flight and go to bed then wake up and land an hour or so later.
Quoting joffie (Reply 10):
The default ATC is annoying, so I don't usually use it, only for takeoff/landing clearance - gets annoying changing centre every few minutes.
Quoting ZKSUJ (Reply 9):
Do you guys wake up for step climbs? Or just sleep all the way thorugh, you would be chewing through gas if you slept through
Quoting united319 (Reply 11):
Ditto. I can't stand how long it takes for the AI aircraft to exit the runway, and what a lousy job the default ATC does at spacing the planes. Every other plane has to do a go around because the other plane on the runway won't exit. If this were the real world you would have mega GDP's at every airport with commercial traffic nationwide!!! That is why I turned off the ATC.

I stay with the plane always, you have to because of the step climbs, or otherwise, I'd normally fly Concorde and it always does fast flights (plus you need to do INS DME updates, along with entering extra waypoints on long flights, since the INS only has space for 9 waypoints).
Quoting united319 (Reply 17):
I don't do step climbs. I climb to my cruising altitude right away. I plan my flightplan ahead of time so that the LNAV takes it where it is supposed to when I am away from the computer
Quoting cpd (Reply 18):
What plane is it? On the B747, it doesn't seem to do the steps itself, you have to dial it into the selector and then push the "button" when the FMC says step to FLwhatever at "now".
Or maybe I'm not doing it right. I'm still learning the intricacies of the B747-400 - but I'm liking it more and more.
Quoting mozart (Reply 25):
Staying with the plane for a Trans-Oceanic flight? Gosh, no. Whato do people do during all those hours above water? Watch the cockpit instruments (they don't move other than fuel going down and he ND advancing)? Watch the scenery (hours upon hours of blue upon blue...)?
