Your Dream Model Aircraft?

Wed Jun 15, 2011 11:02 pm

If you could have any model aircraft that you wish existed, what would it be?

Personally, I would love to have a 1:200 scale Pink Delta 767-400ER (aka Blossom). Currently, I have a Flight Miniatures Delta Wavy Gravy 1:200 scale 767-400ER, which is no longer made:

What would your dream model be?

I'd like a model of N607TW, a 767-231ER. The plane that I had my first flight on...

Aerospatiale Alliance SST, the Concorde replacement.

There were a small number of large scale promo-models built - but no others exist anymore. I so much wished I had one of those!

I don't have that one, but I do have G-BOAE in Landor colours (official BA model) and F-BTSD (official AF model). They are superb, really detailed 1:200 scale models and very expensive. They are the most treasured ones in my collection.

I'd like to find a 777 in any airline colours in 1:144 scale made by Ravell or Airfix.

It's amazing that no European model maker makes 777's. Must be a licence thing.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

I'd really enjoy an Independence Air CRJ in 1/200 and a Colgan Q400 in 1/200 with the new UNITED titles.

I would love a 1/200 or bigger scale VuelaMex 717-200 as four aircraft were painted in full liveries but never delivered.

Minicraft has a really nice 777 in the American livery (I happen to have this one). I think there are also Continental and Delta versions, but I'm not 100% certain.

Right now I'm torn between a larger-scale B-52A/B/C/D/E/F (anything with the original tall tail- larger being slightly bigger than 1/72) and an Eastern 757 (larger-scale would be awesome   ) Or maybe a 1/72 EC, RC, or OC-135...

When I was at LAS about ten years ago, I saw a display case near the NW ticket counter with several aircraft models.

One of the models was an Air Jet Advance 1:200 model of Braniff's "big watermelon".

Braniff originally ordered two 747-127s, but cancelled the order for the second aircraft before delivery. The 2nd aircraft would have been painted dark green, and would have been called "the big watermelon".

Does anyone know if this model is still at LAS?

Those model cases can be seen at various locations thorughout the main terminal and in Terminal D. The Big Watermelon is still there, in the same case an America West 737-100, Alaska MD-80 and TWA 767-200 are in. That's my fave case of all.

My absolute dream model would be a PW B737-200 in 1/200 or 1/144 scale. There used to be one back in the 80s and I even managed to find it in the 90s, so I bought it. Had a beautiful PW on the box but inside it only came with CP and Nordair decals ...

Never did get around to building it, same with a JL B741 and SQ B743 ... don't even know where they are anymore ... attic maybe

Me too - flew them quite a bit as a child. I am surprised how hard it is to find the delivery schemes of such aircraft as the Boeing 707-321, Douglas DC-8-32, and Boeing 747-121. Those that are available either command high prices or are grossly overpriced to begin with. If GJ, Aeroclassics, or InFlight came up with a decent-quality model in 1:400 or 1:500 scale at a reasonable price, I would gladly buy it.

It isn't widely known that Alexander Calder had painted a large scale 727-200 model in a proposed "Salute to Mexico" scheme, but Braniff did not paint an aircraft in this scheme before Calder passed away. A picture of the 727 in the never applied "Mexico" scheme is in George Cearley's "Braniff International in Color" book. Hopefully, the model itself is still around - I'm sure it would be worth a fortune if it ever came up for sale.

Another item that would be neat to have, if it still exists: When Braniff's mechanics were painting the DC-8-62 in the "South America" scheme, under the supervision of Mr. Calder, one of the mechanics liked the scheme so much that he re painted his tool box in a style similar to the scheme being applied to the aircraft. Mr. Calder saw the toolbox, and was so impressed that he grabbed a paint brush and applied his signature to the tool box. Hopefully, the mechanic, or his family, have kept the tool box...

Do you remember KMC? They are the ones who made the AA 727 at 1/72 scale. I believe that they went out of business.
It would have been nice if they had come up with an AA 757 at 1/72 scale, with several registrations, with the option to put winglets on it, also available with Eastern decals with 757 titles on the tail.

I wish there were more propliners, especially in the smaller scales. I'd love to see some of those Golden Age beauties, such as the Ford Trimotor and Curtiss Condor, not to mention a trimotor stinson or a Boeing Model 40. And what about the Fokker F-27 - only Aeroclassics and Hobby Master, though the reviews on the latter have been less then stellar. (The Model Power F-50 is an excellent buy.) I would also love to see more flying boats, especially those from Britain. Again, Model Power comes out on top in that area, but there were many more out there, such as the Empire and Sandrinham. Let's see some more oldies!
