Online Plane Spotting Website

Thu Oct 06, 2011 1:27 pm

Hi all

In this age of the Internet, does anyone know of an online service that will let you keep track of the frames you have seen, i.e. similar to the databases that you buy and download, but purely online based? This would be able to be updated in almost real time, with no downloads to do, everything would just 'work' online. There could even by 'Apps' for Android/iPhone etc that allow you to 'tick off' the aircraft electronically?

If there is nothing online already, has anybody thought of creating something?

www.airport-data.com is the closest website I can think of. It has an FAA data base of all US registrations and I think Canadian and British, Mexican and others as people add them - plus military Bu No, Serials etc are being added daily by users.

You can upload your pictures to the database and have folders you can customize - arrange into folders however you want. Look on the right under list of names - mine is the one with 34,800 photos (not posting my name on here). click on it and you can see all the subfolders you can arrange photos in.

This is the closest thing I can think of for online spotting

There is a new site sounds like its exactly what your looking for.

http://spottedplanes.co.uk

Its FREE and you can log the aircraft that you see, then view the log, order it by column header or search for any text (such as the registration) and it will show in your list all the occurrences that match so showing you all the times you have seen that registration. You can even request from the site owner to have your log exported in quite a few different formats. .pdf, .csv, SQL etc

There is also news articles on there but only a few (this part looks new)

Very easy to register and you can message other users on there too.

I think the owner is working on the possibilty of having a smartphone app (iPhone or Android) which would allow you to add your aircraft whilst at the airport. Although to be honest the site is very mobile friendly so you could add anything you see whilst at the airport/airfield providing you have a internet connection.

There's alsowww.planelogger.com

They have their own database so you don't need to enter the information yourself - just enter the reg and it will look it up for you.

It's also a great site just for looking up registrations, they have one of the largest databases of regs on the net - pretty much every aircraft that's ever been built since the end of WWII. They've got everything from Comets to 787's. Even the Space Shuttle and Spruce Goose are in there!

Right, i hope somebody can help me,
I've always used JP airline fleets print edition to log my sightings but understand that wont be published anymore so am looking to transfer all my registrations to an electronic format.

I have spent hours looking at various databases online or software you can purchase but have found nothing that really fits what i am looking for, which is:

I want to be able to log aircraft by registration.
I then want to be able to scroll through the airline fleets in a given country and see the registrations crossed off or highlighted that i have seen in the airlines fleet list.
That's all i am looking for but cannot seem to find it.

I like to try and see all aircraft in an airlines fleet so looking at a page in a book with my sightings highlighted is ideal. Just cant seem to find it electronically.Basically an electronic version of the book.
Closest i have come is Aviation Global Database, but its a horrible to use Access database that costs alot of money.
Any ideas?

Hi LHRLocal,

I would recommend PlaneLogger. They are currently working on adding fleet listings, they tried to launch it the other day, but it is currently a little too slow for general use. Once they solve these performance issues it should be online in the next week or two.
