Pan Am Clippers In Art: M-130 & Boeing 314

Mon Mar 25, 2013 1:13 am

I was recently commissioned to paint a Pacific sunrise piece of the Pan American 'Yankee Clipper' Boeing 314. Even though I've been painting professionally for 8 years I've never received so much positive feedback on a piece, so on my own initiative I painted a companion piece of the Martin M-130. The latter is set before the Manhattan skyline, as in 1935 this aircraft went to New York on its maiden flight before heading to the Pacific for airline service.

I thought I'd share them here:

Both of these paintings are spectacular. The detail on the aircraft, and in the landscapes, is very well done.

I can almost feel the cold air in the wintertime Martin painting, and smell the flowers and feel the soft trade winds in the Boeing 314 picture.

Thank you for posting them!

Thank you, both! I'm always looking for suggestions and/or requests. Thinking about a Sikorsky S-42 to complete the set, but not sure about the composition yet.

It's hard to believe these are even paintings! Really amazing, not sure how one even goes about creating something like this (I'd love to see a timelapse!).

Out of curiosity, how long did these take you?

Before turning to aviation art full time I ran my own architectural modeling and rendering business in LA - lots of work for Vegas casinos and the like. So I work pretty efficiently and produce about 20 to 30 new pieces a year. I did the 314 in about two weeks and the M-130 in three (Manhattan was time consuming).

I just received a 24 x 36 inch Giclee' print of the 314 on metallic paper, which I thought I'd try out, and I like it a lot! Lose a bit of contrast but the luminescence in the sky and silver aircraft is terrific.
