737 Simulator @ FCO, And All Can Fly It!

Fri Mar 29, 2013 4:05 pm

Hi all,

I'm surprised this didn't show up yet in the forum, I tried a search but found nothing (if I'm wrong please mods delete this post or merge it)...
So basically they installed a fully functioning 737/800 simulator (I mean a REAL one!) in AZ/SkyTeam the business lounge at FCO, I was quite impressed to see an airliner cockpit as I entered the lounge today, and I immediately asked for a ride. I could play being the F/O while a very nice female "captain" assisted me
I took off from Venice, circled the airport and landed rwy 04R... I did well, just sligtly off the runway centerline but I didn't crash
The ride comes absolutely for free. Nice idea, a real treat for all the enthusiasts out there!
Cheers!

Is it full motion? Or fixed? Any pics?

Not a full motion one of course, but absolutely full functional in every detail.

But is it safe to use? I mean, it is based on a 50 year old design..

They used to have these at several places in New Zealand. I flew 5 or 6 hours at various times. Great fun. I even flew under the Golden Gate bridge.

So how does one get the job of flying in a flight simulator all day?

Was the "captain" an actually pilot?

Anyway cool idea. Would love to see this in lounges here or preferbly in my home.

I can't answer on how you get such job, I can tell you she was a young lady who appeared to be very familiar not only with the aircraft systems, but also with flying the airplane. Actually she took the thing pretty seriously and she wouldn't let me just toy with the cockpit, I had to fly the plane the way it was supposed to and my visual for RWY 04R was performed like it was a real landing. If I did something wrong she quickly corrected me.
I personally think she was actually a pilot, but I was shy to ask... like I felt sorry she had a crappy job for a real pilot...

That's quite interesting..

As an FYI, in Toronto there is a place called Threshold Aviation which sells packages for simulator sessions. Their sim is a 737-800 in a former United 737-500 aircraft. It's quite impressive.

Website is: www.thresholdaviation.com

Looks cool. I'll be in Rome for a short time in June until I move on around Europe. Hopefully I'll get time to check it out.
