Collecting In-flight Magazines?

Sat May 18, 2013 8:50 am

Hi everyone.

As my 200th post in the a-net, I am interested to know if fellow a-netters here have the same interest in collecting in-flight magazines everytime they flew with a certain carrier?

I have collected magazines from carriers across Asia, Australia, and Europe for almost ten years. Ever since, some of my friends and relatives who were traveling abroad sometimes choose to hand me the in-flight magazine of the airline they flew as souvenirs, instead of gifts from their destinations   List of the in-flight magazines in my collection, the title of the magazines are in italics :

All Nippon (ANA) Wingspan
Asiana Airlines Asiana
Cathay Pacific Discovery
China Airlines Dynasty
Citilink (Subsidiary of GA) Linked
Emirates Open Skies
Garuda Indonesia Garuda (Renamed to Colours in March 2013)
Jetstar Jetstar Magazine
KLM Holland Herald
Korean Air Morning Calm
Lufthansa Lufthansa Magazin
Malaysia Airlines Going Places
Mandala Airlines Mandala
Philippine Airlines Mabuhay
Qantas Qantas The Australian Way
Singapore Airlines Silverkris
Silk Air Silkwinds
Thai Airways Sawasdee
Turkish Airlines Skylife

Anyone who might have an interest in collecting in-flight magazine would like to share the list of their collections ?

Regards,
Dirktraveller.

I would love to, but I literally don't have the time to list them all. Every airline I've flown, I have the magazine. I practically have a complete set on some airlines, like Iberia between 2000 and 2005.

I have a large four drawer filing cabinet literally full of them. Then I have a load of boxes and another pile in the corner of my office waiting to be put in a box.

I collect them more out of habit now, one day I know I'm going to have to get rid of them.

I have a few magazines myself.

Baltic Outlook (BT)
Bon Voyage (AF)
Holland Herald (KL)
Kaleidoscope (LO)
NiHao (CZ)
Panorama (MA)
Ulisse (AZ)

I used to have a copy of Croatia Magazine, the inflight magazine of OU, but I lost it in Romania.

While not in my personal possession, my family also has copies of La Isla (2P), Mabuhay Magazine (PR) and Smile! (5J). So far, La Isla is the only inflight magazine that I know which is also sold in bookstores.

You could convert your collection into an archive: probably in some countries, inflight magazines may not be preserved.

I'm willing to donate them all to a good home. Collection only mind

Hi Dan and Akiestar,

Quoting PlymSpotter (Reply 1):

Wow, that's a lot. Personally I had two medium sized cardboard boxes of them in total.

Quoting Akiestar (Reply 2):

This is the first time I heard an in-flight magazine sold in bookstores. I knew you can get in-flight magazines on the airline's representative office or lounge, apart from inside the airplane itself.

Quoting Akiestar (Reply 2):

Haha, I even heard that a country is planning to remove in-flight magazines on their flag carrier and delivered them as part of the e-reading on their in-flight entertainment system, but I'm not sure if its confirmed.

I've always taken one with me every time I fly since I was 5 (and I'm certain of this because my oldest one is a Midwest Express Magazine from June of 2000), and while I don't have a huge variety (about half my collection consists of Sky magazine from DL), I still enjoy picking them up and periodically rereading them.
I'd say that my most prizefighter one is probably my copy of Sky from June 2004, which was the one officially celebrating DL's 75th anniversary. Lots of fun stuff in there.

I usually take my free copy with me when going on holiday, however when you are backpacking and are flying with eight different airlines; you'll have to leave some of them behind so save space!

However in my stash you'll find magazines from:

Air France
KLM
SAS
Aeroflot
Finnair
Air Greenland
South African Airways
Qatar Airways
Thai Airways
Cimber Sterling
Brussels Airlines
Austrian Airlines
Lufthansa
Czech Airlines
Estonian Air

I have a stack of in-flight magazines from around the globe and rather a lot from now defunct airlines.

Is there a flight museum anywhere that might want to take them off my hands I wonder?
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

There are two museums I can think of that might be interested. Both at the old Kansas City airport MKC. The Airline History Museum, although it does emphasize TWA. The other is the unrelated TWA Museum nearby at the one time corp. HQ that is now an FBO.

Hi everyone.

Wow what an impressive collection everyone. Glad to know there are other aviation enthusiasts that also collected in-flight magazines too.

I just sorted out all my in-flight magazines recently, and relocate them into a single bookshelf in my living room, I just found out that I have Thai Airways 48th anniversary booklet, which contains quite a history of TG, and how they have developed over the last 48 years.

That is one very organised collection you have.

Yeah, I can understand that though. Usually when the space is tight I prioritize on getting the airlines that I flew for the first time only, others that I have flown (and had the magazine)

I do too! I always feel a bit wary when I "steal" the in-flight magazine from the seat-pocket, and I always feel like I have to hide it from the flight attendants when disembarking. Nevertheless, I began my collection in December of 2010, and have accrued the following magazines:

1. Hawaiian Airlines -------------- Hana Hou! --------- (2)
2. Southwest Airlines ------------ Spirit ---------------- (1)
3. United Airlines ------------------ Hemispheres ----- (2)
4. Lufthansa ------------------------- Magazin ------------ (2)
5. Delta Airlines -------------------- Sky ------------------ (2)
6. British Airways ------------------ Highlife ------------ (1)
7. US Airways ---------------------- Magazine ---------- (2)
8. Condor Flugdienst ------------- Magazin ----------- (1)
9. Emirates -------------------------- Open Skies ------- (1)
10. Dragonair ------------------------ Silk Road --------- (1)
11. Cathay Pacific ---------------- Discovery ---------- (1)
12. Allegiant Air* ------------------ Sunseeker --------- (1)

*The Allegiant Air one was completely advertisements, with one or two pages dedicated two the airline itself.

I just collect in-flight magazines as memorabilia of all the airlines I've flown with, not as a collection that I purchase items for, etc. But that's my collection.

I have a plethora of inflight magazines from:

Northwest Airlines
Delta Air Lines
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines
Qantas
LAN Airlines
Virgin Australia
United Airlines
Lufthansa
EgyptAir
SWISS

Although I don't think it's sold in stores, yet, you can buy Delta Sky Magazine and have it delivered to your house for about $3.00 per issue.

As of Jul 2016 I've flown 192 flights on 43 airplane types with 41 airlines traveling thru 85 airports in 37 countries. I've visited 50 countries with 1 more unique one this year. My greatest achievement was climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro in Oct 2015.

Delta used to have Sky Magazine in bookstores around 2007. It was right after they came out of Ch. 11, and I think they were in stores for a year or two.

Hawaiian Airlines still sells their magazine in selected book stores.

I know, sometimes I do feel the same but most in-flight magazines are actually "your personal copy".

Thanks, great to know that actually in-flight magazines can be bought in stores (or online) too.

G'day fellow A.netters!
Sadly, I just threw out (recycled) a heap of such magazines due to moving houses ... Lots of old Ansett and East West ones, plus countless Qantas, Air New Zealand and Virgin Blue/Australia ones. European ones such as BA collected when I have flown with them on holidays... Also there were a heap of Chinese ones from various airlines from flying domestically within China. I kept some however ...
I always take home the magazine when I fly and pass it on to my parents to read, who then generally pass it on to my uncle and aunts. If I have multiple copies, I take them to work and leave them on the lunch room tables for my staff to look at during their breaks. Other staff bring in magazines as well, but I am the only one who brings in airline inflight magazines!
Keep smiling!
