New Nikon 80-400 Zoom

Thu Jun 08, 2000 11:05 pm

hi everybody
did anyone already try the new Nikon AF 80-400 5.6 - zoom? I'd love to hear any critics about it. Is it as good as Nikon says? is it worth the money (about 2000 US$)?
thanx

Unfortunately, even test samples won't be available until late summer. I have been waiting awhile for its release, since I purchased a D1 two months ago.

Regardless of technology, I highly doubt that any "super-zoom" is ever going to match the quality of a prime lens in the 300-400mm range. So, I think the 80-400 will be no different. It will be nice addition for people who don't want to haul around a ton of different lenses in an enormous bag, thats about it.

All in all, I can't see the justification in buying a $2000 80-400 5.6 lens when you can buy the infamous 80-200 2.8 AF-S for under $1500.

hi Aric
I do have a fix lens 400mm (non AF) and the 80-200/2.8 but I run into a lot of situations where the gap is to big and it would be nice to have something inbetween without having to carry another big lens.
Well, I'll for sure have a serious look at the lens when it's finally on the market.

All of you have forgotten to mention the VR feature of this lens (Vibration Reduction). Nikon claims that this technology will be worth up to "three shutter speeds". Expect this lens to be available late summer at a US street price of $1800...
