Who Is The Best....?

Mon Oct 16, 2000 2:25 pm

Well here is a loaded and very subjective question, but I would like to from all those that frequent this forum.....'Who do you think is the best photographer that contributes on a regular basis to A.Net ?'

My vote goes to;

Tappan. aka Mark G.

Thanks for the votes!!!!

I am a fan of alot of fellow photographers work on this site, however I can say that I am definately a fan of people who really try for the different shots also. I believe in taking side on shots in nice sunshine, but I get bored very easily and need to do other things to make this hobby fun! And taking photos from every possible angle in any conditions is part of the fun!!!

My votes would have to go to (in no particular order):

Mark Garfinkel
Pixair
Lawrence Feir
Samuel Lo
Air Nikon
Frank Schaefer

Keep the votes coming!

Craig Murray

Tough question due to so many good shooters. I would'nt want to leave anybody out.
Can only answer for one picture.
I think Craig Murray's recent photo of three planes is one of the most unique I have ever seen.
Also, How does Vasco get such good light in dreary, old Boston...I will never know.
Thanks,

Hi all

Well I thought I would add my tuppence worth.

I only have one person to nominate for the best photographer. He doesn't upload to Airliners any more and the few shots he has on this site do not do his work justice.

Having met him in person, he really is a nice guy.

His shot's actually persuaded me to visit Hong Kong twice and Singapore Changi once.

Fantastic angles, great colours, great aircraft and the best photographer ever to have shot at Kai Tak.

His name is Andrew Hunt.

If you ever come across his work I am sure you will be impressed because I was.

I you see this Andrew, keep up the good work and I might see you hanging around Changi sometime (and in better weather!)

Yea, there are some killer photographers on this site, and I could list a whole bunch of names. BUT...I feel this is a perfect opportunity to give a 'pat-on-the-back' to one person in particular:

Vasco Garcia

Man, I really like what you've been doing over the past couple of months! Very inspiring stuff to say the least, and I congratulate you for trying different things. That BOS/U-Haul shot was great!!! Keep it up...

There are so many good photographers out there so it's kind a hard job to tell who is the best. But if I have to name some, then I always enjoy watching for instance PixAir and Lawrence Feir photos...

I love all the above photographers that were stated above, but one stands out in my mind from the rest.

Vasco Garcia

There's just something special about his pics, how they have unique and original lighting and positioning, and some of them are absolutely stunning and beautiful.

Some of my favorites...

Although the intent of the original post is admirable, I don't think it is a fair question to ask. We are all familiar (by now) with what our favorite photogs "focus on"

Some shoot:

Everything,
Tail Numbers,
Ramp Shots,
Junkyards,
Storage,
The Dramatic,
The Boring,
The FAKE,
and/or all or some of the above.

From what I have seen here, each photog has their own unique fingerprint. If this were a contest, different categories would be required, as not everybody points their lenses at the same thing.

True,FastGlass. I try to go for the whole plane from the side whenever possible, but that's getting old, tome. I am going to try head-on shots like this one(but with a smaller plane, and actually more head-on):

When rway 24 is active. Because 6-24 is an east-west runway, side shots will not turn out good because the sun will either be directly above/in front, or to the right or left at almost 90* angle.

For 17-35, side shots will turn out good in the morning, and at sunset.

I totally agree with FastGlass, this is an unfair question, and there is no way to rate one person over another, nor should we try. It all boils down to one's personal tastes...(Artistic, ramp-profile, action, air-to-air, scenic, etc...). I personally enjoy everyone's work, because each one of us brings a different and unique approach to the hobby.

Upon reflection, perhaps this was an unfair question, I certainly did not intend to alienate anyone, or anyone's style of shooting.

I have been a professional photographer long enough to know that there is no one 'best photographer'. I guess what I was attempting to do was to find out what type of photos appeal to those that frequent this site.

Again, my apologies if I stepped on anyones toes,

Hi all

I agree with FastGlass and Thomasphoto60.

Everyone has preferences to what and how they shoot.

I would love to try sunrise/sunset shots but here at my local airport, this is not to be. The airport is in the wrong position to get shots with the sun setting and also, Aberdeen is that far north that in the Summer the sun sets about 11.00pm and I need my beauty sleep

Apart from my original post above, everyone who get's there shots on Airliners is doing a good job.

So everyone, keep them coming and remember it will soon be the Winter in the Northern Hemisphere so plently of wet, windy, snowy dark nights to spend time looking through all the new uploads!

I don't think the question is unfair at all, however I agree that there are many many factors and reasons that contribute to each photo and that each photo is unique!

But I must confess I did forget to mention Gazza from Aberdeen in my original post, keep them "you beaut dinki di" shots coming mate!! Love that close up of the AA 777's gear too!! Also Glenn Alderton's RAAF shots sure as hell take some beating!!!

I hope that the work of the people I have mentioned, inspires those who only have a passing interest in aviation photography to make it a hobby!!! It is a lot of fun and has the potential to be highly rewarding (helps if you don't call 737's pigs though...right Frank!)

I have alot of favourite shots on this website, and I congratulate every single photographer that has any shot on here for a job well done!!!

Now.....back to the good Aussie beer!!

Hey,

it seems the population on airliners.net planet really like my pictures. Good to know, hard work seems to pay off.
Also I agree with Craig that for this kind of topic you might need some categories as it is really hard to determine "who is the best" ..........unless we go for overall performance! (hits).
Everyone has their own preference!

the winter is coming no doubt about that , snow on the ground and clear blue skies......I am looking forward to that, altough it is tough to shoot with skigloves on..............

had a good dinner on the company last night, New York is great !!!!!

Aussie 748

Tue Oct 17, 2000 10:57 pm

Hi Craig

When I am next down your way (2002?) can we try airside?

I now just wish we asked to get to see the old HS748's that were there. Good position and light.............and I was on one of them back in it's homeland of Aberdeenshire

For those of you reading this, I flew in a BA HS748 years ago from Aberdeen. There were quite a few based at ABZ operating various BA domestic flights.

It was a sad moment watching them leave for the last time for pastures new. BA replaced with the ATP (bad move).

Now after travelling thousands of miles last year and meeting up with a certain Aussie Beach Bum I was able to photograph my old friends again as two of them, including the one I flew one G-BCOF are based near Sydney.

Such a great and emotional moment for me but I know that you guys will understand.

Sorry.........I have gotten away from the original topic.

Please Craig, can you get some more shots for me again?
I'll treat you to a traditional Scottish Barbie and bring a Haggis with me.

See ya

Gary

Hi,

I must say that there are many great photographers on airliners.net.
But my favourite is Pixair with his extremely sharp photos.
Craig Murray and my friend Anton Pettersson shoot very nice and sharp photos also.

Then we have many nice shots from Boston by Vasco Garcia. Other great shots are also those shot by Lawrence Feir, but you seem to have great contacts for shooting such photos from the air as the AA 737-800 for example.

Jobs...

Wed Oct 18, 2000 7:09 pm

Vasco and Craig especially:

What kind of jobs do you have that enables you to get into these airports and get such great closeups of the birds? Or is there a way that civilians can get a hold of some sort of special pass?

Ok, here a little history about myself, grew up in Germany in an airline family ( Dad used to be the cargo manager for AR in FRA ) end of April 1998 I moved to BOS.
I work for an international logistics company, based out of BOS, (Headoffice is in NYC ) the last 18 months I have been travelling all around the US as we implemented a new software nationwide.
Due to the close relationship to airlines like LH, DL, CO, SR and some others I was able to get up close and personal with some of the greatest airliners flying around these days.

Ever since I moved to BOS I simply combined 2 hobbies into one.
Photography and aviation.

Hope that answers your question.

Just to throw my two bobs worth in...

I reckon Steve Kaplan has taken a lot of great shots. Perhaps his style of photo is just the ype of thing i like.

But (not that i want to say anyone is better than anyone esle), i would have to say the photographer that takes the most inspiring shots for me is Steve.

I also think that Craig takes some VERY awesome shots.!!

This one is kinda tough to answer
especially since I have viewed
so many fine photos on this site.

But I will narrow it down to 4

in no particular order...

Eduard Marmet - for his classic shots...

Colin K. Work - amazing

Henry Godding Jr. - all ya gotta do is look...

AirNikon - yes, he has tons of photos here - but...

not to be excluded:

Frank S
Colin A
Chris C
Mark G
Vasco G
Ralph K
Diane C

and everyone else-

Thanks for displaying your photos...

Hi all
as some others of you I agree with FastGlass: reading the messages to this topic I get the impression to sit in the wrong cinema. Has got A.N. to a platform for contests? Certainly the creative photos by sunset (or ohter particular conditions) are very attractive (congrats to Vasco Garcia, Gary Watt, Marlo Plate....) and I love to look at them but they are finally not the photos I am really searching for. For me A.N. is the immense Database where I can find pics from nearly every airliner. I appreciate very much all the good photos where the colour scheme of the a/c is well visible and the picture is clear and sharp (good scan is important).
There are 1000's of new pics every week and I have no chance to look at them all, but specially the photos from Aric Thalman and Miguel Snoep took my attention (they meet somehow my preferences) - but there are a lot of other photographers with fine pics too! Special thanks goes also to John P. Stewart and Mel Lawrence for the great historic photos!
... and many thanks for the vote, planeboy.

kind regards
Eduard

I hope we do not fall into the "trap" of saying what is
"best" too often. That would be too "religious" or
"political" for me. All I want to say is - I hope this
fine site keeps living up to it's potential - and as far
as I am concerned - it has.
