Yum, many good Cafes in Amsterdam, and AMS is a good airport to spot, here's some info.  Smile

If you are a plane spotter, you will already know our special 'spotters locations'. Not been there yet? Check it out and you may become fascinated by the numerous different types of aircraft from far-away places. Go to the 'spotters location' alongside the Kaag or Buitenveldert runways. You get a perfect view of the plans taking off and landing from a 'spotters promenade', from your car and even from a McDonalds restaurant. There is no charge for access to the spotters' locations.
Special car park
In Rozenburg, there is a special car park where you can watch plans taking off and landing. To reach it, drive from Schiphol towards The Hague. Leave the motorway at the exit marked Aalsmeer/Hoofddorp. At the traffic lights, turn right towards Aalsmeer. You will pass under the motorway bridge. At the second set of traffic lights, turn left (on your right-hand side you will see the Symbio garden centre). You are now on Aalsmeerderweg. The car park is located at the end of the road.

Near McDrive
Another spotter's location is situated close to car park P40 on Loevesteinse Randweg. Leave the A4 motorway at the Schiphol exit and follow the signs to 'long-term parking'. You can also reach it on buses 68, 169, 174 and 236. This vantage point gives you a good view of the planes on the platform, Buitenveldert runway and Schiphol-East. There are notice boards with information about planes and Schiphol. There is even a McDrive restaurant of McDonalds.

4 off us went from EDI-AMS again for 47.50GBP return during Jan.

We hired a car from http://www.holidayautos.co.uk

41 Quid the day so around a tenner each.

The spectators terrace is good but if you want more action get in the car and drive round the perimeter.

There is a real nice area with a cafe and bar just short of the runway and opposite the cargo stands. You can get great photos there with a 150mm lens. You can alos get close to most of the runways final areas where you can shoot aircraft landing with a 100mm lens.
Dont ask me about the sun as it was not in evidence the day I went!

Hope it helps you

Hi all

Colin, next time you are going, give me a shout!

I can easily drive down to EDI, share expenses etc.

I need to do lots of travelling this year.

I saw your shot of a Northwest arriving AMS and that spot looks great.

Hi Guys,

If you want to, please give me a shout when you planned to come to SPL, maybe its possible for me to go around with you that particular day. I have a car, I know the best places and I know the light conditions.

Regards, George.

Hi,

My website has a big description of where to spot at Schiphol including a map of the airport. And see the timetable section for the latest news on new airliners and schedules.

Hey KLM747

How long does it take to walk from the Terminal to point (a) on the map? Is the sun at your back?

Scotty,

Just of the top of my head, that looks like a good 35-45 minute walk.

If you don't want to rent a car, you might find a bus to take you there.

P.S. I'm assuming that there is no tunnel or something under the runways  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Yes I interpreted it as a tunnel under the runway where it says "Onderweg" sounds like "Underway" to me.

That would cut out a long walk presumably

In fact there is a tunnel under runway 06-24, BUT, this tunnel is for airport vehicles only and not a public access road.
So you have to walk all the way from the terminal to this place, which takes at least one hour I guess.
A bus would be better, take one direction Aalsmeer and get out after passing the approach of runway 06.

A taxiride is about 10 minutes.

best wishes,
Marcel

Amsterdam is such a good place for plane spotting .... and don't forget to mention the chips shops along the runway .... there is no better place for Frites special and kroketjes then Holland .... that's dutch fast food by the way .... and stay away from the coffee shops !!!
If AMS wouldn't be about 24 hours away on an airplane i would join u guys there ....
But i shall be there in early june this year .....

Have a great trip to AMS ....

Another daft question. I have heard that there is an airfield tour which starts from the visitor centre in the main terminal. Can anyone confirm this and is it good for getting close to arriving/departing aircraft?

Hi Scotty,

There is a bustour available at Schiphol. It starts at the national aviation musuem called Aviodome, located at Schiphol Centre. The bustour will pass all the main things to see on the airside of Schiphol, like the terminals, drive along the baggage handling, the freightapron. You are close to the aircraft. Taking pictures is a bit of a problem, as you cannot get out of the bus.

The price of the ticket is 15 dutch guilders. You need some sort of identification. (passport etc)

best wishes
Marcel
