My First Shots!

Mon Feb 05, 2001 4:11 am

Well this is one of my first shots taken by my new Pentax ZX-7 QD Body with a Pentax 80-320MM f/4.5-5.6 lens. I have an absolutely horrible Microtek SlimScan C3 flat bed scanner. It is a CIS technology scanner capable of ONLY 300 x 600DPI! I'm waiting for my new scanner to come in, an AGFA SnapScan e50. But for now this will have to do. It exagerated the colors quite a bit. As you can see the photo is kinda blueish, when the shot is not like that at all. The sky is actually grayish white, but as you can see, it turned out blue with my poor scanner. My scanner also tends to blur the images a bit.As soon as I get my new scanner, I'll show the new scan. But for now, this will have to do. This is a United Airlines 777-200 on approach to Runway 16 at Denver Int'l (DEN):

If you don't see the picture above, go here: http://www.geocities.com/airliners_2000/UA777DEN.jpg
Should I submit this photo to airliners.net? Do you think it would be accepted?

Some feedback would be GREATLY appreciated.

Kind regards.

I doubt it will be taken, it looks really grainy though. Wait for your new scanner, then give it a try!

BA
I think its a very good photo but the scanner you have
is problematic and ruins it with the colors.
If you scan it in the e50 i personally think it will be accepted.(I'm not an expert though)
Btw how long you have to wait for the e50 in the US?
I asked in two well known electronic retail branches here in Greece and they dont' have a clue Pissed
I have it second on my most wanted list, this week i'll buy a new lens so i'll go for it in the next month or so.
Good Luck Big thumbs up

The fastest that Amazon.com will ship it is on Febuary 8. But it most likely won't be shipped for about 1 to 2 weeks. I'm quite anxious for it. I can't stand the scanner I have. It is absolutely horrible. I am 100% sure its not my camera. I have the prints, and the prints are just absolutely fantastic!

Kind regards.

It's a good shot BA
I use a Pentax 80-320MM too.
After scanning, did you manipulate it with any software?
I spent 5 mins on it with Abobe & GIMP. see:

http://you.genie.co.uk/gapp/index.jpg

(temporary webspace)

Do you see much difference?

I increased the red/green/yellow slightly, reduced the
noise on on the "blue sky" and sharpened it a bit.
Being a jpeg, it's not ideal, but resaved it to 110k.
I could do a bit more with time...

Cheers

NB: All Flatbed scanners blur the image a bit, it's unavoidable.

Hey Gerry!
I sharpened the picture slightly using ArcSoft PhotoStudio. Its a pretty good program, easy to use. I didn't mess around with the colors really. Maybe I should give that a shot. But as I said earlier, I have a really poor scanner. I'm waiting for my new one, an AGFA SnapScan e50. So hopefully I will scan it with that one, and get better color.

Kind regards.

OK, I have a question. What was the color of the sky on the original print? Does it match the hue of the output scan?

FastGlass, it was very light gray. More of a whiteish-gray color. But I have a very poor scanner. As soon as a I get my new one (1-2 weeks) I will re-scan it and show you the results.

Kind regards.

Ok, BA you asked for it and here ya go...

It's not a bad shot at all. The lighting conditions seem a little strange, probably because of the poor scan. You say the sky looks blue, but to me it's more white and washed-out. I'm sure the negative looks fine and once that new scanner arrives you should be in business. I'd like to see the "improved" scan once you're able to take care of that.

Thanks Mikephotos, I appreciated some feedback from a proffessional like you. Yeah, it is the scan, because the print I have looks PERFECTLY fine. Its more of a whitish-light gray, while the scan is a bit dark. Also, the gray on the plane turned out dark blue with the scan, while on the print it is gray. It is definately my scanner, it is quite a cheap one. As soon as I get the AGFA SnapScan e50, I'll re-scan it and show you the improved results.

Kind regards.

Hi again BA..

"..I didn't mess around with the colors really..."

Even though I have a HP3300 and a FilmScan2000
(Pacific 1800U in the US) I still "mess" around with the
colours and I always will. Why? Because if the scan does not "look right" then I'll try and make it look right.
I always work on the principle, "If it looks right then it is right". I know other folk will have different opinions.

If I had a top-of-the-line Hi-Fi with just an On/Off switch and a volume control with a perfectly flat output, then I would expect to hear music as it was recorded. But I don't. Like most, mine has an equalizer to "shape" the sound to how I like it.
So, don't be surprised if your new scanner makes a modicum of a difference. I hope it does though!
I'm prepared to be shot down!

Good luck BA

Gerry/EDI

Thanks for the info Gerry. It looks great great! Yes, the link did work. The photo looks great! Did you mess around with it in Gimp or Adobe Photoshop? I don't have Adobe Photoshop, but I have Gimp.
Well anyways, one high thing that they mentioned about the scanner I'm getting is that it has super color accuracy, and produces sharp, crisp imaged. Anyways, any scanner out there is better than the one I have now.

Kind regards.

Hi

Same effect can be achieved on Adobe or GIMP.
I did use Adobe Homedeluxe V3 on your shot.
But the same using GIMP is:
R/Click: IMAGE > COLOURS > COLOUR BALANCE.
(Notice that Color is spelt as "Colour", British?)
Move the sliders slightly (Red/Green/Yellow) and you'll see it improve.
The grey and silver of the a/c does come together
better. Your current scanner may not be your favorite for faithful color reproduction but a couple of minutes
correcting it's inherent shortcomings will get results.

Cheers

Gerry

Well, I submitted the photo to airliners.net I'll tell you what my reply is. If it gets rejected, I won't be angry. As soon as I get my new scanner quality will be MUCH better.
